Washington report on last year’s census shows marriage as a decaying institution. For the first time the marriage rate declined to 1,033 per 100,000, from 1,055 in 1916, while the divorce rate rose to 136 per 100,000 from 112.
Austin Oct. 3 The state supreme court overruled a rehearing motion in the case of the Texas Farm Bureau Cotton Growers association against J C Stovall. The court had held cooperative marketing contracts valid and today’s decision disposes of any further state court appeal.
A prayer meeting for West Hill is scheduled for tomorrow at 2 30 p m at the home of Mrs Syphord 708 West 9th Street Local residents are invited to attend for an hour of prayer and reflection at the specified address.
Oklahoma City Oct 3 The impeachment measure against Governor Walton swept the state by four to one with partial returns from 1577 of 2837 precincts predicting about 300000 votes cast in the special election. Walton called the result meaningless and warned of martial law until the Ku Klux Klan is crushed. An injunction to delay certification was filed as legislators prepare for an early session.
The Navy airship ZR-1 landed in Lakehurst New Jersey after a 21 hour flight from St. Louis. In Roswell New Mexico the Chaves County Carnival committee urged merchants to decorate storefronts for the fiesta opening tomorrow to create a strong first impression of the city. In Bhureka California on October 3 Alex Kels a wealthy Lodi merchant confessed to killing an elderly man and staging the body to look like his own in a wrecked car to claim a $100000 life insurance payout. He was arrested a month after missing in the supposed auto disaster. Relatives buried the body as Kels but insurers blocked payment. Found in a box car Kels attempted suicide with a pistol upon arrest.
An advertisement promises five hundred small gifts for the first five hundred women who visit a Roswell store on Thursday and Friday, available only in person. Local officials report fines levied on bootleggers as city and county enforcement tightens on liquor violations. Unsettled weather with chances of rain. New Mexico forecast calls for fair western regions and rain in the east, cooler in the far east.
