Not Afraid of Railway Rate Legislation in Congress

President J J Hill of the Great Northern spoke at a Lewis & Clark Exposition banquet in Portland Oregon on October 3. He warned that federal railway rate controls would not touch railroads closely and that such measures could bankrupt mileage if enforced, while referencing Russia’s lower rates. Also noted was Louis Hammerling’s nomination as collector of internal revenue in Scranton and opposition from some Pennsylvania lawmakers. Mitchell declined to discuss coal field labor issues with the President.

Mitchell Meets Roosevelt on Labor Talks

John Mitchell president of the United Mine Workers of America met with President Roosevelt in Washington by appointment. He stayed about thirty minutes and said he urged the president on labor matters during the interview.

Great Northern train robbed near Ballard in Seattle

The Overland train was halted five miles from Ballard at 8 45 p m as two men in rain coats seized the locomotive and revolvers were leveled at the engineer The baggage and express car were dynamited and the safe blasted Three youths arrested at Everett denied links to the robbers seven men were active in the hold up no serious injuries were reported and Messenger Anderson was wounded lightly The local safe remained untouched and the train was delayed about two and a half hours

Woman in the Case Shield Claim Sparks New Confession

Miss Katherine Leonard sister of Harry Leonard, who confessed to stealing $359,000 in bank securities, says he was the victim of another man he tried to shield. She provided police with the name of a woman who lodged part of the securities in a safety deposit vault.

Sheepman Shot by Herder in Wyoming Quarrel

Newcastle Wyoming Oct 3 Charles Minter a leading sheep man of Upton was shot and instantly killed by one of his herders during a quarrel yesterday. The herder’s name was not learned and authorities say the weapon may have been fired in self defense though this cannot be verified.

Chadwick Case Heads Calendar For Writ of Error

Cincinnati on October 3 saw Mrs Cassie L Chadwick’s petition for a writ of error at the top of the US Circuit Court of Appeals calendar. The case involves bank wrecking and a conspiracy to defraud with a record described as extremely voluminous. If the court rules against her, she faces a ten year sentence in the Ohio penitentiary and she is currently held in Apoga county jail.
