Dock Union Orders Return After Court Ruling

The International Longshoremen's Association told 69,000 dockworkers to return to Atlantic and Gulf Coast ports by 7 p.m. New York time after a federal court halted the strike for 10 days in the national interest. Union leaders planned meetings to organize the resumption of work and picket lines faded as the ruling took effect.

Burglary attempt ends with beating shooting at Colonial Club

A 19-year-old local man Alfonso Renteria Pena was beaten and shot after attempting to burglarize the Colonial Club at 419 E. Second St. Proprietor Raymond Jones was injured but held Pena at the club until police arrived. Pena is in serious condition at St. Mary's Hospital with a punctured lung. Jones is in fair condition with facial and head wounds. Pena had been paroled from the New Mexico State Penitentiary on Sept. 24. Nearby Hurricane Hilda threatens the Louisiana coast with evacuations and rising winds as officials monitor the storm.

Notre Dame fall kills two as tower jumper causes death

A woman leapt from a Notre Dame Cathedral tower striking an American tourist below. both died. Other items note lawmakers and federal officials debating issues while Morgan City evacuates for a gulf hurricane with 14,000 residents, Red Cross bringing 10,000 cats to Opelousas for refugees.

Goddard Commemorative Stamp Events At Roswell

Five rockets with first day covers will be fired Monday at Roswell Post Office as part of a two day Goddard observance. Astronauts Alan Shepard and Eugene Cernan will attend Sundays ceremonies. The Roswell stamp marks the 8 cent air mail issue honoring Dr. Robert H. Goddard.
