Spacecraft Mariner 4 finally located Canopus guiding star after two false starts. Jet Propulsion Laboratory reports a 72 month mission covering 325 million miles toward Mars with Canopus as the reference for earthward alignment.
The Soviet Union rejected a compromise formula from UN Secretary General U Thant aimed at avoiding a U.S. Soviet financing clash. Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko discussed the issue with Secretary of State Dean Rusk ahead of the U N Assembly opening Tuesday, after Thant’s proposal to the four big powers last week.
Viet Cong forces and buffalo disrupted government infantry in a swampy sugar cane area near Saigon before fighting their way free. Government troops suffered four killed and 13 wounded, while VC casualties were higher with 15 bodies counted along canals.

Salvador Hernandez of Wingate and Jess Rodriguez 14 of Knox City died. Jesse Hernandez 32 lost an arm and both legs. Joe Rodriguez 14 was injured.
A Belgian International Air Services DC4 crashed on takeoff at Stanleyville airport killing the crew and most refugees aboard. Seven survivors remained from the Congo lese refugees being evacuated amid rebel activity around the airstrip. An investigation team headed to Stanleyville to determine the cause.
A Cuban girl aged 18 jumped from the Havana bound Fundador cargo ship into the Atlantic to avoid returning to Cuba. Coast Guard rescued her near the vessel as it neared Havana. She requested political asylum and was handed to immigration authorities. other Congo turmoil reports follow.
