White House proposes six degree heating rule for oil users

The White House floated regulations requiring oil heated homes to reduce thermostats by six degrees below last year and other space heating by ten degrees. A December 27 effective date replaces the January 1 plan, with enforcement limited to fuel shortages between deliveries and no direct penalties.

NMMI seeks 650000 in bonds for campus improvements

New Mexico Military Institute trustees move to obtain authority from the State Board of Finance to issue 650000 in revenue bonds for education athletic dormitory and dining facilities on the NM campus. Bond terms call for a 5.4 percent average interest rate and a 13 year repayment period backed by gross revenues of the institute. The request goes to the Board of Educational Finance for review on December 10 in Santa Fe.

United Airlines cuts over one hundred January flights

United Air Lines announced it will eliminate more than 100 flights in January and furlough at least 950 employees due to a fuel shortage. The cuts will reduce fuel usage by about 9.5 percent from 1972 levels and come into effect January 7 without CAB approval.

United Way drive boosts Middle School support and oil ration plan

Mesa Middle School students raised about 70 for United Way through a homeroom drive led by Judy Gormley. The event honored Mary Margaret Sappington’s girls P E class and Roy Oldfield’s English class as top contributors while national fuel rationing plans take effect January 1.

First public playing of Watergate tape inaudible in court

In a Washington court the first public playing of a subpoenaed Watergate tape segment occurred. The June 20 1972 recording with President Nixon Ehrlichman and Haldeman ran 18 minutes but was mostly inaudible with a clear buzzing interrupting sound. Rose Mary Woods suggested a possible button error but denied causing the full 18 minute gap.

Snow and Weather Update From New Mexico Ruidoso Area

Snow fell off and on through the day in the Ruidoso area with a low of 21 degrees. Three inches of snow were on the ground this morning and higher elevations lacked reports. Police noted iced highway sections near Fox Cave but driving conditions were improving.
