Thanksgiving Highway Toll Rises Ahead of Last Year

The death toll on highways during the four day Thanksgiving holiday rose above last year's record pace. Through 6 p.m. Wednesday 492 died in traffic crashes including 94 under 18. At least five people died in separate head on crashes near Dryden New York and Arcola Illinois.

Fete honors Gov Campbell for New Mexico service

A dinner Wednesday night in Roswell honors Gov. Jack Campbell for his term of office. The Roswell Chamber of Commerce sponsors the public event at the Roswell Inn starting at 7 p.m. Presentations will be made by Charlie Fowler and Donald Anderson, with emcee Ross Malone. Tickets are $12.50 per couple.

Ray Embry, ally of Governor David Cargo, was critically injured at Coronado Airport when he stepped into the front propeller of a twin engine Cessna returning from Carlsbad. The incident also involved Mrs. Cargo and Mr. and Mrs. Dan Ely of Albuquerque as Embry jumped from the plane to help park it.

Pneumonia Returns Mathews to Hospital

Henry Mathews Jr. 41, managing editor of the Santa Fe New Mexican, is back in the hospital with pneumonia. He was injured in a mid-September automobile crash and had surgery to reset breaks in both legs before being released. doctors say the infection worsened his weakened condition.

Injunction Halts Strike By Teachers In Youngstown

Youngest Kentucky Sheriff is Slain

In Paintsville Kentucky Jim Ward about 33 killed Johnson County Sheriff Walter Meek and engaged in a 60 minute gun battle with state and county troopers before taking his own life with a shotgun after Meek arrived to serve a lunacy warrant. Meek was 28 and the youngest county sheriff in Kentucky.

Pittsburgh Couple Welcomes Quintuplets At Magee Hospital

A stunned Pittsburgh couple became parents to five girls born at Magee-Womens Hospital just before 3 am. The babies ranged from 1 lb 7 oz to 1 lb 12 oz and were 22 weeks premature, all in incubators. Doctors gave mixed survival odds for the infants.
