The second annual meeting of the Peeps Valley Teachers Association will be held in Roswell next Friday and Saturday. A full program is planned at Central 901 and the Presbyterian church with many speakers, discussions, and musical interludes across both days.
New York reports Mayor Schmitz of San Francisco dismisses charges as political revenge by foes due to his opposition to District Attorney Langdon who aimed for governor. A fire at the Price and Co. store in Roswell started by an electric iron left on burned through the sewing room floor, filling the shop with smoke and coating goods with soot. The blaze was smothered by smoke and extinguished after oxygen ran out. the stock and building were insured.
Coroner Carson reports 61 deaths in the Woodville immigrant train wreck on the Baltimore and Ohio line. Engineer Frank Galnaur, conductor Samuel J. Most, and head brakeman Daniel Woodward are held responsible. the railroad company is not censured. All three men are under arrest.
The Carlsbad Argus reports two men died in the storm near Carlsbad Ed Lamar a wagon boss and San tiago a sheep herder both employed by Arcey Brothers. Jack Kemp the Hope and Artesia mail carrier survived frostbitten. Judge A A Freeman is missing but considered safe by locals awaiting word from the mountains.
Joe Kemp, Artesia mail carrier, battled freezing conditions while delivering mail on Monday. He abandoned his buggy at Eagle Draw, rode on horseback, fainted from the cold, and was later taken to Hope for treatment. He recovered gradually and is reported to be improving.
Monroe Carroll was jailed by Judge William H. Pope to await the April term grand jury on perjury charges while defending Lon Reynolds in a contempt case. Bond set at 500 dollars. A motion to quash the Stewart Sunday law indictment was denied by Judge Pope. District court hears Jacoby v Thompson. Jury in Jim West horse stealing case stood 10 to 2 for acquittal.
