A freak storm on Lake Erie left Erie Pennsylvania virtually cut off with two feet of snow, 45 mph winds and thunder and lightning. Traffic halted, public transit stopped, and most industries closed as routes 5 and 20 became impassable.
A Eunice schoolteacher Bonnie Jean Lee, 22, died when her car left State Road 18 ten miles south of Hobbs and rolled over twice. The holiday period remains, with police urging motorists to drive safely. Earlier, two other fatalities on Thanksgiving Eve raised New Mexico’s toll to 343 for the year.
A U S Navy P5M missing since November 9 with 10 men aboard remains unfound after an intensive search around 300 miles north of Bermuda. The search was called off November 14 but all aircraft and ships were asked to maintain lookout in the area.
A 15 year old junior high student Lee Gurule fractured both ankles after falling 70 feet into a coal storage elevator in Denver. Firemen rescued him an hour later from the cavernous shaft while two companions watched. Gurule told doctors at Denver General Hospital that he stepped onto an apparent solid plank over the elevators.
The New Mexico Farm and Livestock Bureau will present its second annual leadership award next week to Tom Mobley of Artesia. He is president of the freshman class at New Mexico A&M.

CAMP KILMER New Jersey Freedom Flight No 2 brought 74 Hungarian refugees to America aboard a Trans American DC4. They landed at McGuire Air Force Base after a 35 hour flight from Vienna and were taken to Kilmer reception center. Brig Gen Sidney C Wooten welcomed them as processing by immigration and health officials began. Two more trains of 74 and a fourth plane to Milwaukee were planned.
City police report seven traffic crashes during Thanksgiving, six within the city and one outside, plus two separate fires. A box car blaze near the depot damaged 25 bales of cotton, with Fire Chief Daniels detailing hose lines and response times. In the crashes, Mariano Castillo and Bertha Muse were involved in a 9:20 a.m. collision on East Wildy and South Grand injuring two Plymouth passengers. A second incident on West First involved Bonnie Mounce and Esther Helmstetler. Louise Mounce was injured. A Dexter youth was rescued from a wreck in a 1953 Chevrolet.
Coventry Rhode Island firefighters extinguished a flash back blaze in an oil burner and found the stove pipe ended in an inverted paint pot just inside the chimney, explaining months of smoke for Mrs Leonard Fecteau.
In Cairo, Gen. Sir Charles Keightley said Britain will withdraw one battalion almost immediately from Port Said as token steps promised to U N Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold. The U N force under Maj Gen Burns will expand from near 1 000 to about 6 000 as tensions ease.
Morgan Nelson, chairman of the Board of Educational Finance, says the state can meet urgent educational needs without tax increases. He favors using surplus funds for building projects and intends to review budgets ahead of a Santa Fe meeting December 3 4 5 to prepare legislative recommendations.
Gov elect Mechem expressed no support for UNM funding in the 1957 budget while Highlands University and New Mexico Western College presented their needs. UNM seeks a rise to 6.854 million over two years plus nearly 3.2 million for new buildings. Mechem predicts future raises for all colleges but not for UNM. Popejoy cited a fall 1956 enrollment gain of 949 statewide, with UNM contributing 826 of that increase.
Clarence Hinkle will speak on land resources and Roger Aston of the South Springs Foundation will report on a survey about diversions of surplus waters to the arid Southeast New Mexico area at the Southeastern New Mexico Grazing Association meeting in Roswell. Other speakers include Murray Morgan Al Woodburn T J Deason Jr and Roy E Crocker. Charlene Lynch urges all livestock men to attend.
Fidel Martinez age 63 probate judge of San Miguel County died at his home in Albuquerque yesterday. Appointed in 1951 he was twice re-elected. Services are planned for tomorrow morning in Albuquerque.
At Holloman Air Development Center New Mexico 1st Lt Eli L Beeding oversees the Daisy Track project studying biodynamics and abrupt deceleration on a sled ride. The program compares with Lt Col John P Stapps rocket sled tests and aims to understand human response to high G forces during aircraft deceleration.
Sheriff T. Clark Olsen cooked a Thanksgiving feast for seven prisoners at the Bonneville County jail in Idaho Falls. The meal included a traditional turkey and all the trimmings, giving inmates a square deal on the holiday.
The IRS breaks down 124.869 million dollars in New Mexico federal taxes for the year ending June 30, with 116.284 million in income and employment taxes. It notes tax burdens cross state lines and lists occupational stamps for spirits, wines, beer, narcotics, coin-operated devices, and gaming premises.
Steve Jackson, 40, a grocery store worker, died in a one room home blaze in San Antonio when the fire destroyed his dwelling.
