Col Raymond Robins Found in Whittier Amnesia Case

Col Raymond Robins, a noted prohibitionist, was found in Whittier after a national search. He traveled with two federal agents to Asheville for medical tests, reportedly suffering amnesia. His nephew John Dreier identified him after the locator effort, and Robins was later seen at breakfast in a hotel.

Rupp Secures General Contract For N M Military Institute

W G Rupp of Roswell won the 47191 50 dollar bid for the new Post Exchange building at the New Mexico Military Institute. Roswell Plumbing and Heating won the plumbing bid at 8119 dollars and Purdy Electric won the electrical bid at 947 dollars. Total contracts total 56257 50 dollars with completion by May 1 19S and dedication on commencement day next June. The building will be named the J Ross Thomas Memorial in honor of a former institute instructor. Seven bidders competed for the general contract, five from Roswell and one each from Artesia and Albuquerque.

Roswell Lions Thank Locals for Christmas Toy Drive

The Roswell Lions Club thanks residents for toys donated for the Christmas Toy Treat for city children. The club lacks enough toys to meet need and asks that any additional items be brought to the fire station or called in to 1413 or 314 for care. Toys from this morning’s drive are not yet counted, likely fewer than last year’s first collection.

War veteran Dean Shelton dies by his own action in New Mexico

A coroner's jury in Albuquerque ruled that 38 year old World War veteran Dean O. Shelton killed himself. Notes from the inquest show he was despondent over ill health. Shelton moved from St Louis twelve years ago and had been hospitalized five years.

Indian Dance to Commemorate Blizzard

In Gallup New Mexico the Zunis host a night time Navajo dance to mark the anniversary of last year’s blizzard that stranded 1300 Zuni and Navajo along the Coronado trail near Zuni. Eight Indians died in the storm, the worst in 38 years in the region.

Padlock proceedings were filed today against Helen Miller of Carrizozo owner of an eight room adobe house known as The Adobe. The government charges the owner and occupant Reil violated federal prohibition laws and that whiskey was sold.

Senator Vesey L. Jones Dies at 68 in Seattle

Washington senator Vesey L. Jones long time chair of key appropriations committee died in a Seattle sanitarium after a grueling re election campaign. The 68 year old Republican whip suffered a heart ailment and died with his son and daughter by his side. Born in Bethany Illinois, he served 22 years in Congress after entering the House in 1899 then the Senate in 1909.

Ex-service Banquet to Feature Wood and Neely Speakers

Invitations have been sent to Osborn Wood adjutant general of New Mexico and to H. W. Neely adjutant of the New Mexico department of the American Legion to speak at a banquet for all ex service men on December 6 sponsored by the Charles M de Bremond Post of the American Legion. Herman Crile will preside and George Cowan is in charge of arrangements. The venue has not yet been selected.

Judge H A Riker schedules a November hearing on findings of fact and law in J M Wooley et al v Shell Petroleum Co et al over an oil dispute in Lea county. About two million dollars at stake in heirship questions. Plaintiffs won a memorandum opinion last month. judgment to be drafted after hearing, with possible settlement or appeal to New Mexico Supreme Court.

Potash Shaft Being Sunk Near Carlsbad

Work has begun on a second shaft in the potash fields southeast of Carlsbad by United States Potash Corporation. The new shaft sits on state land about 100 feet south of the existing shaft which currently yields 700 tons of potash daily.

Readvertise for bids on the Border Hill job

Santa Fe road contractor Ek. J. Mulroney who had the lowest bid for the Border Hill highway project withdrew his bid after a mistaken calculation. The highway commission will re advertise and bids will be opened in about three weeks in Santa Fe. The project calls for ten and a half miles of new highway starting 15 miles west of Roswell.

MRJ MARTIN DIES WELL KNOWN HERE

Major Charles P. Martin U. S. Army retired died at his Denver home and will be buried in Arlington, D. C., next week. He is father to Charles P. Martin Jr., a NM Military Institute graduate and officer, and Olivia Rhea, eldest daughter of Mrs. John W. Rhea of Roswell. The Martins have ties to Roswell and visited here often.

Amendments Ratified In New Mexico Vote

Official returns from 18 of 31 counties indicate both amendments to the New Mexico constitution were ratified in the November 8 election. Amendment No. 1, to exchange lands within national forests, received 19,166 for and 8,648 against. Amendment No. 2, limiting introducing bills after day 45, passes with 16,350 for and 7,450 against. Vaughn Holds Talks With Highway Commission On Hiring Lists

Dan Vaughn head of the Roswell federal job office and state emergency employment chairman returned from Santa Fe where he conferred with the State Highway Commission about labor on emergency highway projects. They agreed contractors must obtain list information via county committees and the lists are now supplied by the highway department as needed. Vaughn also met with contractors from last Thursday’s awards to discuss project employment details.

Red Cross Roll Call Nears County Goal

W C Lawrence, chairman for Chaves County Red Cross Roll Call, reported near noon that about 550 dollars had been raised toward a 750 dollar county quota. The active canvass ended tonight but residents can still contribute by leaving funds at The Record office.

Highway worker seriously injured in landslide near Arroyo Hendon

Santa Fe New Mexico reports employee B. Smith was seriously injured when an embankment collapsed during jackhammer work between Arroyo Hendon and Tres Piedras. He suffered a fractured skull and severe upper body bruises and was hospitalized after being hit by rocks and dirt.

Pittman predicts beer return amid fanatics in Senate

U S Senator Key Pittman arrives in Santa Fe for rest and asserts the nation will again have beer and light wines. He says the country cannot be run by fanatics and predicts Democrats will secure a two thirds Senate vote to allow beer and champagne. He declines to identify the six fanatics he mentions.
