Sen Edward M. Kennedy stood by as doctors amputated Edward M. Kennedy Jr. to treat bone cancer. The operation followed by the Kennedy family as the bride was given away in a wedding for a late brother’s child. A surgeon not involved in the case estimated a 10 year survival around one in three.
The State Board of Educational Finance voted to raise the proposed 1974 75 state appropriation for the UNM medical school by 600000 to 32 million in total with a 4.8 million rise for seven public colleges and universities to 47.4 million for education and general costs. The board also proposed a higher education reserve fund similar to the public school reserve. Wilbur Shackleford and Dr William McConnell to shape details.
President Nixon told about 400 Associated Press editors he is innocent of Watergate and declared, I am not a crook. He outlined personal finances, opposed immediate gasoline rationing, and said energy savings steps may suffice. Eastern New Mexico Medical Center to dedicate a remodeled radiology suite funded by a $100,000 Bondurant estate grant. Officials say the gift buys $125,000 in new equipment including a 1200 MA X ray machine and a Tomograph, with remodeling nearly complete and a probate hearing set for Monday to validate the will.
Former New Mexico Attorney General Boston Witt announced his Democratic bid for governor in Albuquerque. He pledged full disclosure of campaign finances via Daniel M. Smith and Co. and said contributions have been small so far, mostly self-funded. Witt, from Carlsbad, previously served as attorney general and now practices law in Santa Fe as a partner in Standley Witt and Quinn. He is the third Democrat in the field joining Bobby Mayfield and Jerry Apodaca.
Hospital administrator Charles Thomas reviews ongoing remodeling at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center radiology suite set to house about 125000 dollars in new diagnostic equipment. A 100000 dollar grant from the late W E Bondurant Jr estate in Roswell will help defray costs.
