Shah of Iran Visiting Washington Faces Protests and Injuries

Rival demonstrators clashed near the White House as the Shah of Iran met President Carter. About 124 people were injured and 12 arrested in Tuesday’s protests, police kept groups apart, and hospitals treated several demonstrators including a 66 year old after skull surgery. The Shah planned to meet Mondale and testify before Congress before leaving for Paris.

County Officials Prepare Legislative Needs Package in Roswell

New Mexico Counties Gather to Advocate Legislature Proposals

Officials from across the state meet at the Sally Port Inn for a two day session of the New Mexico Association of Counties. About 175 members plan to draft proposals and suggestions for state legislation to improve county office efficiency. Phillip P. Larragoite chaired discussions.

Valley Bank of Commerce gains federal approval in Roswell

Organizers of a proposed independent state bank in Roswell receive the go ahead from the FDIC in Washington. John H Burson says the bank named Valley Bank of Commerce plans a January 3 opening and will repurpose the Credit Bureau of Roswell building at 217 W Second St. The project lists 1.2 million in fully subscribed capital stock and about 100 stockholders. Directors include Burson Bettie Hughes Bobby Baldock Colin McMillan Samuel Spencer Norman Stevens Jr and Peggy Yates. Banking staff will include Robert Scaling as cashier and Harry Birrell as public relations officer.
