Phillip Yonge, 58, long-time Taos resident and prominent lawyer, died Saturday in a Sweetwater Texas hospital after a long illness. He lived in Taos for 25 years and was well known in the community.

District Court Opens With Marijuana Case and Docket

District Court opened a term with State of New Mexico v Alfonso Franco for marijuana possession and sale and State of New Mexico v Jerry Gonzales for selling liquor to a minor. Jury selection from a 36 name panel continued as 75 people crowded the courtroom.

Eight cases were heard in police court today, four for intoxication, two for gambling, one for drunk and creating a disturbance, and one for drunk and fighting. Total fines amounted to $80.

FBI reports George Alexander Boss a 20 year old Mount Vernon New York man an ex employee of Manufacturers Trust Co arrested in El Paso Texas for allegedly embezzling 19 700. Boss disappeared Oct 19 from Harlem branch after leaving with cash and traveled coast to coast before being captured at the Hilton hotel El Paso. He faced federal charges under the Federal Reserve Act with possible five year prison term and 5000 dollar fine.

UNM Grants Morning Off After Win Over Wyoming

University of New Mexico students were granted a morning off by President Tom Popejoy after the 9-7 victory over the Wyoming Cowboys. A delegation of about 300 students delivered the request at his home at midnight Saturday to secure the holiday.

Ex Klansmen Nabbed by FBI Over 1951 Robeson flogging

FBI agents arrested 14 former Ku Klux Klan members in North and South Carolina on charges of kidnapping, interstate transport, and flogging of Christine Rogers and Ernest Rogers on November 16, 1951. Victims were beaten after being abducted from Lake View, South Carolina, and driven into Robeson County, North Carolina.

Truman to Discuss White Case on Radio Tonight

Washington reports Democrats in Congress rallying behind Truman as he prepared to discuss the Harry Dexter White case on radio and TV. Welcome Readied For King and Queen In Clovis Tuesday

Greek King Paul and Queen Frederika of Greece will be welcomed in Clovis Tuesday afternoon as their Santa Fe rail cars are switched to a Houston bound train. An estimated 150 to 200 Greeks and Greek-Americans from Clovis, Roswell and other New Mexico towns will greet them at the Santa Fe depot, with delegations from Amarillo and Lubbock also attending. The royals arrive from the West Coast at 2 30 p.m. and stay about 40 minutes after the switch. The pair had a weekend in Los Angeles with studio visits and church services en route to Arizona's Grand Canyon.

Hobbs Man Held in Rifle Slaying of Fellow Resident

Hobbs resident Modesto Maldonado, 23, is held in the slaying of Jose Valenzuela, 23. Valenzuela’s body was found by city police at the city dump after a 6 a.m. discovery. State police say Maldonado admitted the killing claiming self defense after a confrontation during a nighttime drive to a movie.

Howling Mad Koreans Reject Red Explanations 22 to 6

At Panmunjom, Koreans rejected Communist pleas to return home by 221 to 6 in favor of South Korea. Only 472 prisoners were called for explanation with 227 of 471 Koreans interviewed choosing the South and resisting Red persuasion. Interviews lasted hours as guards kept order and subcommittees began planning a Korean political conference.

Vaughn Woman Dies of Injuries in Auto Crash

Mrs. Evela Espinosa, 38, of Vaughn, died in an Albuquerque hospital from injuries suffered when a truck carrying her went off U. S. Highway 54 near Santa Rosa. A front tire blowout caused the crash on Nov. 7. death reported Sunday.
