Chemical tank eyed as new gas weapon in war

The Associated Press reports a new poison gas weapon, the chemical tank, a fast steel Caterpillar carrying lethal gases. Lt. Col. Augustin M. Prentiss says it can release dense, non-persistent gas to break through masks, possibly requiring a radically new gas mask. One tank with 1000 pounds of phosgene could affect a 500 by 100 yard area downwind and extend deadly concentration along nearly two-thirds of a mile. Europe moves to supply such tanks, among several gas instruments awaiting broader civilian protection.

Rotary Club Toy Drive Seeks Used Gifts Saturday

The Lions Club asks Roswell residents to place used toys on porches for collection by Boy Scouts starting nine o'clock Saturday. Toys will be turned over to city firemen who repair them for Christmas distribution to needy children.

Wells Dies From Hunting Accident Injuries

Newton Oliver Wells twenty one died after being accidentally shot by companion Edgar Holliday while rabbit hunting near the Wells ranch forty two miles north of Roswell. He had lived in Roswell seven years, born August 31 1918 in Runnels County Texas. Survived by his mother four sisters and two brothers and an uncle. Funeral at Talmage Memorial Chapel Saturday at two with Talmage Mortuary handling arrangements.

The Cham ber of Commerce revealed all prizes in the City Beautiful contest. Multiple firms could not supply items due to closures, delegating duties to W C Lawrence and Montgomery Ward Co. Extension Club visit tours homes and shows remodeling

Tom Hall discussed Roswell athletic attendance and support, urging larger crowds at high school and Military Institute games. Former president Harry Mopberly spoke on Rotary Occupational Service, noting progress and remaining gaps in employer employee relations and public services. Will Lawrence urged Rotary and Red Cross drive participation.

Justice Pierce Butler of Supreme Court Dies

Associate Justice Pierce Butler of the Supreme Court died today at 73 after bladder trouble. He had been hospitalized since last summer, with a two week return to home, affecting Roosevelt appointee majority on the court. Butler ranked as leading dissenter and was the court's only Catholic. survived by wife and four children.
