Federal road aid released for all states in 1929 plan

Seventy five million dollars in federal aid for state road construction, plus fifteen million for national forest roads, will be apportioned under the Federal Highway Act. Funds require dollar for dollar state matching except in limited areas, with immediate access to twenty five million and the rest later.

Crown Prince Hirohito May Soon Be Made Regent

Tokyo reports Crown Prince Hirohito may be named regent with imperial powers as the emperor’s ill health prevents him from ruling. Federal aid highway program expands with bold funding plan

The State highway department will gain direct control to match federal allotments for interstate maintenance. New rules require 18 foot surfaced widths unless narrower by the Agriculture Secretary. Decline in Drunkenness and All Arrests in 59 U.S. Cities

In 59 cities including New York Chicago and Philadelphia with populations over 20 million, official figures show arrests for drunkenness fell from 316 842 in 1916 to 109 758 in 1920. Across all offenses arrests dropped from 986 301 in 1917 to 856 693 in 1920, down 129 608 or 14 percent.
