Sinking Lumber Carrier Carries Crews Into Pacific Rescue Effort

Rescue teams battled 20-foot seas to aid crew from the Carnelian-1 as the ship sank west of Honolulu. Six were saved by the freighter Wisteria, two aboard Hunter, and others floated on logs and rafts while awaiting help from Coast Guard cutters and aircraft. Weather hampered operations with winds easing but threats from renewed storms. The Carnelian-1, owned by Mitsui OSK Line, radioed flooding and cargo loss before vanishing beneath the waves.

Patrolman Recovers Bullet Pocketed From Sears Incident

Patrolman Ken Gross responding to a burglar alarm at Sears Roebuck on Main Street said a .22 slug hit his left hand and ribs, then was found in his coat pocket. He wore gloves and was uninjured. police noted no theft and suspect accidental alarm.

Santa Fe AP reports New Mexico finance director Vincent Montoya said current general fund receipts will total 25.5 million more than four months ago projections. He told the Legislative Finance Committee the result is a year end surplus of 67.7 million.
