Laika the Space Dog Reported Dead in Space Pact

The Italian newspaper L Unita quoted a Moscow correspondent that Laika the first Earth creature in space was put to sleep with narcotics in the last bite of food to avoid suffering. Tass said the Sputnik program fulfilled its scientific observations and no Moscow official word was given on Laika.

Weekend road toll mounts in New Mexico seven deaths raise total

Seven people died in New Mexico road crashes over the weekend raising the year’s toll to 374. victims include Jessie James Felder 28 of Portales killed when his pickup hit two trees on US 70 near Clovis and Ruby Lee Theus 20 of Las Vegas Nev who perished in a head on collision east of Moriarty. Other fatalities involved Albuquer que residents Don Kewert 37 and Willie M Kil lyoum 34 in a head on on US 85 and Eugene Matter 24 of Oscuro Range Camp in a single vehicle crash near Capitan.

Discharge of Rifle Hurts Artesia Boy Near Truck

In Artesia the accidental discharge of a 30-30 Winchester rifle injured 16 year old Carol Wayne Stevens while he sat in a pickup cab. John ny Holt, 13, was with him as the rifle discharged while dust was wiped from the weapon. The rifle, reloaded after fox shooting, belonged to Phil Holt.

Dexter Man Wounded by Hunters Near Nogal Canyon

Dallas Morgan, 47, of Dexter, was shot in the right wrist and thigh by unidentified hunters in Turtle Leaf Canyon northwest of Nogal. The shooters fled. sheriff S M Ortiz investigates. Man shot while seated ends deer hunt near Hope

23 year old Ronald Lease of Portales was shot in both legs while seated during the 1957 big game season at Bates Ranch near Hope. Joseph Nickson of Lovington fired thinking he saw a deer’s head. Lease was transported to Roswell for bone fracture care. Nickson fined 200 dollars and banned from hunting for ten years after aiding the injured man.
