Governor A W Hockenhull speaks at Clovis Armistice Day event urging lasting patriotism and support for disabled veterans. He reflects on World War I sacrifices, the aim of peace, and the duty to honor both living and dead while preserving unity and humanitarian aims.
A two year old Peter Baldwin, son of a San Francisco Bridge Company general manager, was found asleep in a neighbor's home with two playmates after a statewide search in Southern California. Authorities will investigate why the child was not reported missing promptly.
Dr. Austin D Crile urged peace through Jesus teachings while praising a strong US defense. He noted disillusionment with League of Nations and disarmament efforts, calling for Navy buildup and support for disabled veterans in a World War Armistice Day observance.
Governor Hockenhull and W. G. Head returned to Clovis after quail hunting in the bird country with each taking a bag limit of 12 birds. The governor was guest of honor, delivered the Armistice Day address, and attended the Clovis Tucumcari high school football game in the afternoon.
The recent meeting of WRorder Division officers and department heads in Roswell was very successful. Captain J M King credits Roswell citizens for cooperation and support during the divisional conference. Major E R Gifford spoke at the closing service. The visitors toured Carlsbad Caverns and the New Mexico Military Institute with National Park Service and USA officials.
New York, Nov 11 AP The Vanderbilt cup contract bridge tournament saw four teams reach the semi finals after surprise quarter final upsets. A women composed foursome from Atlanta toped defending champions by 4 480 points to reach the semis. Notable upsets included Culbertson group losing by 1 759 and Jacoby Burnstine Gottlieb Schenken out by 730. The Augusta based team of Barrett Cary Daniel and Don Daniel 18 were halted by Elinor Murdoch and Helen Bonwit.
In Havana on November 11 soldiers and civilian snipers opened skirmishes in mid town at 11 30 am, scattering motorists and pedestrians into houses. Earlier, soldiers and sailors conducted house to house searches for armed radicals amid sporadic sniping from rooftops following Thursday’s Azares battle. The morning outbreak grew serious as the day progressed.
A sinking railroad track near Watsonville California halted five trains for five hours endangering the Stanford Indians en route to a Los Angeles game. Three hundred workers poured rock under the track but the line was restored in time for the 3 33 o clock crossing as players crossed safely.
The New Mexico Music Festival will be held in Roswell on April 5 6 7 and 7 sponsored by the Music Supervisors Section of the New Mexico Educational Association and by the New Mexico Music Teachers Association. Joseph E Maddy conductor of the National High School Orchestra will guest conduct the New Mexico all state high school orchestra and band. Mrs Merl F Cramer of Raton will conduct the all state high school chorus numbers on the orchestra program.
Samuel Shields aged fifty three died yesterday afternoon at 12 30 in Acme New Mexico where he had lived the past fifteen years as a farmer until illness forced retirement Survived by his father two brothers O L Shields of Acme and J H Shields of English Indiana and two sisters Mrs Ida L Lewis of Austin Indiana and Mrs Della Barnett of English Indiana Funeral services will be held this afternoon at two from the Talmage Memorial Chapel with Rev H C Henderson officiating Interment at South Park near the Talmage Mortuary
Santa Fe November 11 AP The New Mexico Supreme Court denied a habeas corpus writ for R F Roberts organizer of the National Miners Union serving a six month sentence for violating martial law during the Gallup coal strike. The court ruled the governor may restrain liberty during insurrection and that military intervention was appropriate as local officers were unable to maintain order.
Amateur and pro stars briskly began the National Capital Open at Kenwood Country Club in Washington amid frost. The 18 hole first round started after a weather delay with a $2000 prize. Favorites included Tommy Armour Ralph Guldahl Joe Kirkwood Horace Smith Johnny Revolta Craig Wood and more.
