Cargo Chalks up Decisive Victory

Republican David F. Cargo scored a decisive upset over Democrat Gene Lusk for New Mexico governor. The GOP gained strength with running mate E. Lee Francis as lieutenant governor and appears to hold four state offices for the first time in modern history. Incumbent Democrats won remaining races, including all three congressional seats.

Republicans Sweep State Races As Dems Lose Ground

Republicans gained ground in Congress and across states in Tuesday elections. Ronald Reagan won California governor’s race while Charles Percy unseated Paul Douglas in Illinois. GOP also pushed toward 24 24 governor split and added Senate wins for Baker Hatfield and Griffin. Johnson faces tighter funding margins for Great Society programs.

GOP Makes Major State Senate Gains

Republicans surged in the New Mexico Senate on election night led by Gov elect David Cargo. Partial returns show potential control of 17 of 42 seats with gains concentrated in Bernalillo County and Chaves County, plus early leads in San Juan and other districts.

Republicans Sweep Chaves County Races In Local Wins

In Chaves County on Tuesday Republicans won all county races and led in several state contests. David Cargo carried the governor’s race by 801 points over Gene Lusk, while Max Coll edged Lawrence Goodell by 56 votes for State Representative. S. H. Cavin beat Peniod Toles for State Senator by 137, and Tom Nord won Sheriff with 7,181 votes to 4,800. Anderson Carter led U S Senate locally by 2,417 but lost statewide to Clinton Anderson. County voters turnout was 55 percent of registered voters.

Rock Flung at Hartford Mayor Kin­sella Home

An unknown assailant hurled a rock and flaming newspaper at Hartford Mayor George B. Kinsella’s home early today. The rock cracked a storm window and a regular pane, while fire was stamped out by the mayor. The incident may relate to a threatening anti Negro letter received by the Hartford Human Relations Commission on Oct 26.

Eddy County Goes For All Democrats

Eddy County voted solidly Democratic in Tuesday elections with 13,629 ballots cast down from 18,397 two years earlier. District 1 state representative T. E. Brown Jr. (D) defeated Thomas F. Welch (R) by 187 votes, Brown 1,715 to Welch 1,528. Other county results show Democratic leads in U.S. Senate, Congress positions, governor, and various state offices.

Unofficial New Mexico Election Returns Reported

Unofficial results show secretary of state figures Evans 122,060 Bundy 120,735. state auditor Romero 119,253 and Thompson 121,045. state treasurer Sanchez 119,400 and Thomas 123,833, from 1,034 of 1,100 divisions.
