Washington reports the Roosevelt win accelerates post election duties as Congress prepares the 1935 34 budget. The new president elect will command patronage and policy in a House Senate balance of power, shaping relief and winter emergency actions before March inauguration.
The Agriculture Department estimated national cotton production at 11 947 000 bales of 500 pounds gross weight based on Nov 1 conditions. Last year’s crop was 17 096 000 bales. Chaves County voters elected Democrats across races with wide margins. In Roswell governor race Seligman 2590 Dillon 2090, Roosevelt led Hoover 2934 to 1484. County totals show Roosevelt 4193, Hoover 1937. Key wins include Peck over Thorne for Sheriff and large county posts like treasurer and school superintendent.
In Albuquerque on November 9 AP reports Roosevelt leading with 41 975 to Hoover 22 854 as 289 of 777 precincts report. In Taos County eight of 28 precincts show Roosevelt ahead 18 to 639 Hoover 639 Armijo 617 Chavez 717 Dillo 817 Seligman 716. Democratic candidates face continued tallying across state.
Mrs W E Doolin, 19, daughter of ranching Walter Jones, accidentally shot herself at her Pine Lodge road ranch 35 miles west of Roswell while putting away a .22 pistol. Husband rushed her to St Marys hospital. bullet entered left breast, broke a rib, punctured another. Doctors cautious on seriousness. bullet not removed. Parents were in Roswell today. Doolins had returned to ranch last night.
The Associated Press reports Franklin D Roosevelt winning 472 electoral votes to 59 for Herbert Hoover as Democrats gain control of Congress and governorships. The massive victory spurred optimism abroad while confirming sweeping changes across states, with repeal of Prohibition and liquor rulings shaping the political landscape.
In Dutchess County New York on November 9 AP reported a Hoover victory over Roosevelt in Gov Roosevelt’s home area. Hoover led with 25 511 votes to 20 078 across 87 districts and Hyde Park town margin favored Hoover by 139 votes.
The Associated Press tally at 1 30 p m EST shows Democrats with 25 elected plus 31 holdovers for a total of 56 seats. Republicans have 4 elected and 30 holdovers for 34 seats. Farmer-Labors have 0 elected and 1 holdover. Five seats remain doubtful. A majority requires 49 seats.
The Associated Press reports Hoover with 20 electoral votes and Roosevelt at 472 with 39 in doubt. A candidate needs at least 266 electoral votes to win, and the popular vote alone does not determine the presidency.
At 1 30 p m EST contest results for the 425 seats in the new House of Representatives place Democrats at 241 seats, Republicans at 78 seats and Farmer Labor at 0. Present Congress figures sit at 218 for Democrats and 209 for Republicans with 116 still doubtful.
Partial results across states show Roosevelt leading in several early returns. Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Arizona, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Virginia and Oklahoma report precincts counted with Roosevelt and Hoover totals. Senate race notes Reynolds leading Newell in Virginia.
The Record reports a large Roswell crowd at the party with attendance far exceeding other election events. Roosevelt and Garner were declared winners as national returns came in, while local counts stretched to dawn with boxes still missing and many results relayed to the crowd.
