A Roswell fireman Bill Moss lost his shoe when a city fire truck turned a corner by the Roswell State Bank. Bank staff retrieved the shoe and kept it safe. The fire call was on West Second near a junk car blaze.
Two grenades exploded within seconds in a Phnom Penh cinema killing 18 and wounding 46 as police hunted the perpetrators. The blast was reported Saturday night with uncertainty over terrorism as a motive.
Bernard Lortie 19 testifies he and three others from the Quebec Liberation Front abducted Labor Minister Pierre Laporte and that he left the hideout the day before Laporte was strangled. He names accomplices Francis Simard and brothers Paul and Jacques Rose. The inquest adjourned as police report the minister's body was found. Cross remains missing and Cross’s family travels to Europe.
Roswell city council set a vote on a proposed amendment to allow private kindergartens with 15 or fewer children in single family zones. The panel previously approved drafting the text and denied a day nursery permit at 616 S Pine Ave. The meeting includes other zoning cases bids flood control plan plumbing board appointments and various business items.

Cardinal Cushing's burial follows a funeral Mass at Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston. Attended by eight of nine American cardinals and the Kennedy family, the rites honored the archbishop and his charitable work at St. Coletta's School. The crypt burial at the Hanover school faced the playground, as he wished, with Cardinal Wright delivering the eulogy.
The prosecution in Rome urged mercy for Raphael Minichiello a U S Marine born in Italy claiming he is good timid and hard working and asked for six years five months rather than the 30 year maximum. Public Prosecutor Antonio Scopelliti stated Minichiello was guilty on all eight counts including violence assault and kidnapping and resisting arrest while noting air piracy is not an Italian crime.
Gov Bob Scott sent 350 National Guardsmen to Henderson North Carolina after a night of fires and sporadic gunfire that damaged a tobacco warehouse and a home. Police reported 35 arrests as a 60 man state patrol contingent aided local authorities, a curfew was imposed and alcohol sales halted.
After five years of study the Atlantic Pacific Interoceanic Canal Study Commission rejects nuclear blasting to widen the Panama route. Two conventional options near the existing canal are favored at about 3 billion dollars, with a 1.5 billion lane-locks modernization alternative.
Artesia led a four city United Fund contest by reaching 98.6 percent of its goal. Roswell came in second at 95.58 percent of a $159,400 target, with about $152,651.49 raised or pledged. Carlsbad reached 89 percent and Hobbs 77 percent.
Dr. Charles W. Meister told the Legislative Universities Study Committee that New Mexico needs more vocational schools as many youths bypass college. He cited industry training needs, campus security plans, and ENMU’s past dormitory utilization while noting out of state enrollments have fallen and tuition policy affected housing. He opposed voluntary student fees for campus papers but supported action against obscene material.
