Reports from Moscow suggest Russia may attempt to parachute Laika back to Earth after her orbit in the second Soviet satellite. The 40th anniversary passed without any evident Soviet scientific feats to mark the date.
Tornadoes ripped into Texas Louisiana and Mississippi killing at least 12 and injuring up to 200. Deaths listed in Orange Groves Alexandria Carencro Crowley and Greenwood with extensive property damage and fire hazards as workers search for victims.
President Eisenhower says the USSR likely leads in some missile and satellite work and appoints Dr James R Killian as top scientific expeditor to push US ahead. He strengthens defense by naming William M Holaday as missiles coordinator while praising overall free world strength and nuclear gains. Page 10.
A tired driver, Roy Jack Rutherford, 21, of Aztec, dies in a crash on U S 550 near Aztec blamed on fatigue. Aztec Junior High football players on a bus suffer minor injuries and continue to Farmington. Je e Orty, 55, of San Juan Pueblo, dies from injuries in an accident near Penasco. State trauma toll rises to 366 for the year, up 43 from last year.
Travel agent Paul Zink, owner of Travel Reservations, recounts a tense episode in Egypt during Oct 6 13 including passport checks and a $150 fine after hotel officials failed to obtain police clearance. He described limited English communication with Egyptian officers and an expedited return to Cairo after the incident.
A husband from Hereford Texas traveling to Roswell after learning his wife was in an accident was injured in a second crash and admitted to St. Mary’s Hospital. Milton E. Busby, 30, sustained a compound leg fracture and head injuries when his 1957 Ford skid and rolled three times. Clyde L. Webber and Wanda Webber, both 30, endured minor injuries. The wreck occurred 11 miles west of Roswell on Bloody Run. Police investigated led by Billy J. Miller. Earlier, on Picacho Hill on Bloody Run, Pearl King Busby, 43, drove a coach towing a 22-foot trailer. passengers included daughters Joyce 14 and Lois 11.
Roswell Museum and Art Center presents the fifth Circle Exhibit with about 25 works chosen from 200 submissions by a jury of Prof. John Tatech and Dr. Reginald Fisher. Open Sunday 1 to 5 pm with a talk by Dr. Fisher at 3 pm and refreshments. The event highlights regional art from New Mexico, Western Texas, and Arizona.
Newport Ky an exchange teacher shocked the Campbell County Chamber of Commerce by saying she has seen slot machines in wide use here. Miss Sylvia Harrison explained in England a slot machine is a coin operated device for soft drinks cigarettes candy bars and other items.

Packed houses expected for the Stars Over Ice show at the Agricultural Building Roswell. Three year old Robbi LaLonde headlines alongside 31 performers under Ken Kane with Essie Davis and a Hollywood Hoedown chorus. The Roswell Ice Queen will be crowned tonight as the tour promises fast moving numbers and family entertainment through Monday.
J P White Jr and three partners from Roswell and Albuquerque plan to buy the Ladder Ranch from Torrea Land and Cattle Co. The 46 120 acres of patented land plus state leases and federal leases total around 119 000 acres. The price is undisclosed and completion likely after March. The ranch sits 5 000 to 6 000 feet high near Gila National Forest.
The group in Albuquerque meets January 8 to elect officers ahead of the state YD convention in Roswell on January 31. Officers chosen will help coordinate activities and party outreach.
