Greek forces claim thousands of Italian troops captured in Albania while reporting limited gains. German air raids pound London and other English cities as British airmen raid targets in Germany and threaten Rome.
The state department said Germany would not assure safe conduct for an American ship to an Irish port to repatriate about 1200 citizens. Italy promptly offered such assurance, but Berlin called the English area a military zone and declined. The plan involved the liner Manhattan sailing to western Ireland.
Unofficial results show district attorney winners in several districts. Carmody and McPherson both Democrat over Republican opponents. Bryan Johnson beats Lloyd Johnson for district judge. Threet defeats Mechem. Noble defeats Armijo. Watts is unopposed for district attorney. Hodges beats Sherman. Burg trails Burg and Waggoner for district attorney as returns are incomplete. Federici defeats Caldwell. Hensley is unopposed.
The Italian high command said Fascist divisions advanced beyond the Kalamas river in the northwest front. Italians reportedly reached the river eight days earlier from Albania. Koritza siege nears critical phase as 30,000 troops are trapped. Greek and British planes bomb Koritza and Argirocastro while Italians strike Phlorina. Mussolini announced the start of the big push. Small Italian advances reported along the west coast amid Greek counter air and land activity.
Late returns show New Mexico setting a record with more than 187000 votes as Democrats clinch decisive margins while Republicans gain seats in both state houses and key judicial races. Roosevelt and Willkie lead nationally, with Miera and Mitchell in gubernatorial and other races.
Ballot boxes used in Tuesday’s election were impounded in Valencia Harding and Sandoval counties to await the county commissioners’ official tally on November 12. Judges ordered custody citing tampering fears and irregular handling by local election officials amid party conflicts and disputed districts.
President Roosevelt and Secretary Hull began rechecking the US diplomatic corps in Europe as war and shifting relations prompt a reshuffle of ambassadors and ministers. Joseph P. Kennedy, ambassador to Great Britain, met Hull but gave no plans, with officials saying no change expected and Kennedy to London after a vacation amid bombings. US representation now rests with charges d affaires rather than ambassadors in four major Western capitals.
The Chaves County Singing Convention will gather at East Grand Plains on Sunday November 10 with a basket dinner at noon. The program starts at 10 30. Singers from distant places are expected many staying Saturday night with calls to arrange transport. Roswell residents needing a ride are advised to contact Mr James.
Secretary Morgenthau said he would ask Congress to raise the national debt limit to 60 or 65 billion dollars to cover deficits through June 30, 1942, as he announced at a press conference amid rearmament notes. He noted possible further financing of 4 billion for defense and that total needs might reach 15 to 20 billion next fiscal year, while expressing that a pay as you go plan was unlikely in the near term.
Maj Herman Crile of Roswell wired congratulations to Clinton P Anderson of Albuquerque after Anderson defeated him in the congressional contest. Anderson replied thanking Crile for a clean campaign. Crile, resting from campaigning, voiced gratitude to supporters and willingness to cooperate with the new representative.
President Roosevelt, first to win a 12 year White House run, told cheering crowds outside Union Station he and Mrs. Roosevelt prefer farm life but enjoy Washington, D. C. most. He thanked supporters for the election triumph as Mrs. Roosevelt and Vice President-elect Wallace rode with him through throngs estimated at 50,000 to 60,000 gathered on the plaza.
Secretary Ickes filed his resignation with President Roosevelt stating he would step down from the interior post if the White House elects to accept it. He said he supported the president’s reelection and urged officials to let the new administration freely reshuffle the cabinet.
The Tacoma Narrows bridge broke in half during a heavy wind causing a 50-foot roadway section to plunge 190 feet into Puget Sound. No one was on the $6,400,000 suspension span when it fell, though an automobile and a lodging truck remained on the structure. The bridge, third longest in the world, began cracking after swaying sideways.
W C Lawrence leads Red Cross membership drive in Roswell and Chaves County aiming for 1600 to 2000 memberships. Old stickers must be removed before new 1940 stickers go up, with downtown calls Thursday and residential drive starting Friday. Each adult pays one dollar.
A city council resolution will be introduced to authorize the mayor and city clerk to cooperate with the Civil Aeronautics Authority and to sign an agreement aimed at obtaining federal funding to develop Roswell airport facilities. The move, supported by the Chamber of Commerce, targets inclusion in national defense airport improvements. The council meets at 7 30 tonight, postponed from Tuesday due to the election.
Calvin E. Eastham, 16, son of Mrs. G. A. Braswell, suffered a broken leg when attempting to board a moving truck on the Vaughn highway north of Camp Berrendo. He was rushed to the hospital. Driver Tom Warren Wright said the boy waved for a ride, grabbed the door handle, and slipped as the door opened. The injury was ruled likely from the leg being twisted by the fall. Wright hauls for W. T. Davis of Edgewood, N. M.

In Las Cruces New Mexico on November 7 light rain slowed cotton picking with no forecast for when large scale picking would begin. Local observers noted the weather would influence harvest progress and scheduling.
John Boyer, 85, of Roswell, was badly hurt when struck by a car on the Honda bridge on South Virginia. He suffered a broken leg and severe scalp laceration and was listed in fair condition at St. Mary's hospital. The driver, W. H. Brown, 24, also of Roswell, skidded about 81 feet. the crash occurred at 6 20 p m as Boyer walked north on the west bridge curb.
Will C. Lawrence Roll Call chairman for Chaves county spoke at the Rotary luncheon about the 1940 Roll Call to be held in the county November 14 15 16. John Halter showed a film of Red Cross first aid work. Lawrence introduced Mrs L O Fullen and Mary Hanely new city and county nurse and H E Miller first aid chair. D J Shrecengost gave an entertaining talk on his air trip to Washington and eastern cities.
Carlsbad New Mexico November 7 Record crowds were predicted for the Cavalcade Park roping matches at Carlsbad Sunday and Monday drawing outstanding stars of the rodeo arena. The event features a world championship steer roping match long anticipated by fans with hundreds of out of state visitors expected and many requests for reserved seats handled by the Carlsbad Goat Ropers Club. George Weir of Hobbs is named among the notable entrants.
Mrs. John Hadder east of Roswell posted a for sale ad in Record classifieds for 75 high grade hens and sold the lot before noon the next day. She notes many calls after the sale and thanks readers for support.
