A 55 member Chamber of Commerce meeting approved plans to form a local corporation to build 40 to 50 rental homes for air base officers. Up to $20,000 in stock, plus FHA borrowing, will fund construction with rentals repaying the loan. About 185 units are needed. remaining homes to be built by individuals.

British Capture Vichy Ships Aiding Nazis

London nov 4 the admiralty announced British warships boarded five French vessels flying the Vichy flag off South Africa after intercepting them crews tried to scuttle the ships the communique accused the Vichy regime of running contraband for Germany from east to France in escorted convoys meanwhile a naval clash in the English Channel last night between British patrol ships and an Axis escort left two torpedoes fired at a large supply ship the supply ship was probably sunk or beached and one British ship was damaged

Special Train To Roswell Carlsbad Game Assured

A special Roswell Carlsbad football game train is assured with 300 tickets sold by noon. About 50 more tickets remain at the Chamber of Commerce. Round trip fare 121 dollars includes tax. Abandon Hope For Missing Men Of U.S. Reuben James

The Navy announced it has abandoned hope of finding the seven officers and 88 enlisted men lost when the destroyer Reuben James was torpedoed. Intensive searches west of Iceland found one body and 46 survivors, with one of the rescued dying two days later.

Salinas Torpedoed Without Warning Reaches Port Safely

The United States naval tanker Salinas was torpedoed southwest of Iceland but reached port in safety with serious damage and no loss of life. The incident followed the sinking of the destroyer Reuben James, with 97 crewmen either killed or missing.
