Town hall on flood disaster offers answers to victims

About 125 residents affected by the October 19 20 flood attended a town hall at Grace Community Church Roswell. A panel from 10 entities outlined federal aid after President Biden signed a disaster declaration covering Roswell Dexter and Chaves County. Panelists included Kerry Moore Roswell City Councilor Edward Heldenbrand and health department staff plus a justice official warning against scams. Private aid groups with various specialties were also present.

Biden grants major disaster declaration for Chaves County

President Biden approved New Mexico's request for a major emergency disaster declaration for Chaves County to unlock federal aid for Roswell, Dexter, and nearby areas hit by Oct 19 storms. About 5.79 inches of rain fell in Roswell and Chaves County in six hours, causing severe floods along the Spring River and Hondo River corridors. Two fatalities were reported, with millions in damage.

Red Cross Aids Roswell Flood Victims at Local Sessions

Daniel Ramirez and family hosted Red Cross assistance at 1210 N Main St as floodwaters from Oct 19 20 inundated their home. Grandchildren Taeyah Rubio four and Song two played nearby while officials offered aid inside Alpha Home Care LLC space.

Suspect in Cahoon Park double shooting gets probation

David Cruz Salas-Silva, 19, who was 16 during the 2022 Cahoon Park double shooting that killed two teens, was sentenced to two years of supervised probation on Oct. 16 in Roswell. He changed his plea to no contest on one count of tampering with evidence, while charges of first degree murder robbery and conspiracy were dismissed.
