Chaves County Cotton Output Rises While Prices Fall

Cotton growers in Chaves County report a near tripling of production this year with about 24 000 acres planted and an expected 8 000 bales processed, up from 3 025 in 1976. Prices, however, have dropped from 70–80 cents per pound to around 50 cents, amid overall rising U S and world production.

Kruger Named to New Mexico Racing Commission

Gov. Apodaca appointed Willard C. Kruger of Los Ranchos to succeed Herman Tabet on the New Mexico Racing Commission. Tabet was fired after acknowledging credit from Fortuna Corp. for gambling debts tied to Sunland Park and Ruidoso Downs. Kruger, architect of the Roundhouse and State Prison projects, will serve until Jan. 1, 1983.

Judge Denies TRO In Gov Moratorium Hiring Case

District Judge Bruce Kaufman refused the Highway Department’s request for a temporary restraining order to lift Gov. Apodaca’s nine month hiring moratorium. He planned hearings in about three weeks and criticized one state agency suing another as not the best way to run government.

Glenn and Schmitt Inducted Into Space Hall of Fame

John Glenn of Ohio and Harrison Schmitt of New Mexico were inducted into the International Space Hall of Fame alongside Michael Collins and others. Glenn orbited Earth in 1962, Schmitt piloted Apollo 17 in 1972 spending over 22 hours on the moon.
