Republicans sweep Chaves County elections in 1970s vote

Republicans won most county and state seats in Chaves County with 18 192 ballots cast an 80 percent turnout. Aiello Corn and Jennings won county commission seats. Harris retook treasurer. Kelly Jr Tessier Jr and Anderson won House seats. Democrats held all three Senate seats. Ford Schmitt Runnels and Goodell led statewide races as Amendment No 2 failed.

Carter defeats President Ford in presidential race

Jimmy Carter wins the presidency with 272 electoral votes as Ford trails with 235. Ohio Oregon and California fluctuations fail to change the outcome though absentees prompt questions on vote counting. Carter returns to Plains amid a triumphant reception as stock markets react to the historic win.
