Wool Bowl picks visiting team for annual junior college classic

Wool Bowl officials plan to announce Monday which team will face the New Mexico Military Institute Broncos on Thanksgiving Day. The 9 a.m. press conference at the Roswell Chamber will name the visiting team. Tickets at the gate are $1. The opener features Western Texas J C of Snyder vs Lubbock Christian College at 11 a.m.

McMillan urges Carlsbad site for nuclear waste depository

State Rep. Colin McMillan urged establishing a nuclear waste depository near Carlsbad during the NRCD convention panel. He cited New Mexico uranium deposits as key to the nation's energy future, predicting 400 permanent local jobs and $300 million to $400 million in regional economic impact from the project. Cemetery Board Rejects Sprinkler Bid in South Park

The Cemetery Board rejected a $176,320 underground sprinkler installation bid from Lee Landscape Co. of Albuquerque as far above the original estimate. The board deferred decision on installation method and handling of $105,000 in materials until the Nov. 17 meeting. Sim B. Christy IV, board president, stated shock at the overage.

Dutch magnate Caransa freed after ransom bargain

Maurits Caransa, 61, a Dutch real estate tycoon, was released unharmed after negotiating a ransom of 10 million guilders (about 4.16 million dollars) with four abductors who held him for five days in Amsterdam. He said the captors were criminals not political, spoke French and English, and did not threaten his life. He was dropped in the street and picked up by police, reuniting with family at headquarters.

Roswell considers study on GHS-RHS merger details

Roswell Independent School District opened a formal study on merging Goddard and Roswell high schools. The board directed administration to pursue the analysis at minimal cost, with initial targets in early 1979 and a preliminary report due in three months.
