Cassini Grand Finale and 2017 Solar Eclipse Highlight Space Events
NASA’s Cassini mission enters its Grand Finale with 22 orbits between Saturn and its rings before a September descent into the planet’s upper atmosphere. The craft will map gravity and magnetic fields, study Saturn’s rotation, and reveal ring composition while continuing data collection. A total solar eclipse on August 21 will darken a wide swath from Oregon to South Carolina, offering a 1.5 to 2 minute dusk-like window across much of the United States, the first such cross-continent event in a century.
