State Police Tighten Patrols as Memorial Day Toll Rises
The Associated Press reports New Mexico highways saw four deaths during Memorial Day weekend with Isabel Padilla and Fermin Lujan of Albuquerque among the recent victims. Police Chief Joe Roach ordered intensified patrols as total deaths for the year reach 169, with Las Cruces and Las Vegas areas noting crashes and injuries. The National Safety Council warned the toll would rise above 360 across the 78 hour period, while drowning and other accidents bring the weekend total to 393.

California born driver Big Bob Sweikert won the 500 mile race in 3 hours 53 minutes 59.53 seconds at Indianapolis. Bill Vukovich, a former winner, died after a high speed crash on the back stretch. Don Freeland and Art Cross also exited with engine trouble as 14 cars finished. Sweikert led a late surge to claim victory, with Jimmy Bryan briefly leading before dropping out.

Hagerman Artesia Boys Wounded in Weekend Shootings
Two nonfatal shooting incidents involving youngsters were reported in the Artesia area over the weekend. A 6 year old, Hager Medrano, shot himself in the foot while carrying a rifle, and a 10 year old accidentally shot his 12 year old brother, David Bihel, in the hip while playing with a pistol. Both were treated by Artesia doctors.

In Ocala Florida a 73 year old man Edward Lindley and his 70 year old wife Bertha Lindley are held for murder after a gun battle that killed three officers Deputies Curtis Youngblood Bob Wooten and Assistant Chief M O Tuck. Deputy W G Ergle Jr. was wounded but is expected to testify soon. The slain officers responded to a complaint that Lindley fired at neighbor Douglas Wingfield over a garden dispute. Lindley said he fired to alert Wingfield after Wingfield allegedly provoked his wife. The couple face prompt arraignment and grand jury action is planned.
