Roswell residents must use post type mailboxes in the new Westlawn village subdivision along East Hobbs Street under current policy. Door delivery will continue for other areas, says Postmaster Arthur Meiering.
Roswell residents were told there is no plan requiring curbside mailboxes. Postmaster Arthur J. Meiering explained new parcel post carried by mail vehicles reduces need for street boxes. He noted only new subdivisions or areas with mounted service would require boxes on the street.
Skylab 1 astronauts unfurled a sunshield at Cape Kennedy to cut cabin heat from 125 degrees toward 100. Commander Charles Conrad Jr. and crewmates Joseph Kerwin and Paul Weitz planned a full day of medical and scientific work, while NASA officials expected the parasol to flatten wrinkles and stabilize power.
Roswell taxi driver Charlie W. Smith, 44, was struck by a car on U.S. 84 south of Santa Fe early Saturday and died at the scene from multiple head wounds. The driver Sally Ann Kiekhaefer, 28, and passenger James Kiekhafer, 22, both of Denver, were uninjured. Smith lived at 509 La Fonda in Roswell and worked for City Cab Co.
Flooding remains a concern as work crews clear the channel near Glover's Packing Co. on North Garden Avenue through Spring River Park. Cement lining and old slabs from Roswell Industrial Air Center will reinforce drainage in a project funded at about $20,000 from a local levy.
A Secret Service agent died and six others escaped serious injury when a presidential helicopter crashed off Grand Cay Bahamas during President Nixon's visit. The dead agent's name was withheld pending family notification. No Nixon family members were aboard. Traffic deaths reached 164 by midnight Saturday as Memorial Day weekend began.
Construction begins within two weeks on a 73 unit town house style project named La Honda Vega in Roswell at Sunset and McGaffey. The two story semi luxury complex will cost about 1 320 000 with 124 parking spaces and all electric heating. Occupancy of the first unit is expected in about six months with completion around February.
