Signals from Mariner 4 photographed Mars last July 14 suggest the spacecraft could operate into 1968. Its radio transmitter is powered by a solar panel. officials at JPL said the Goldstone antenna received signals from about 197.5 million miles away.

In Mundelein Illinois a planned ice show party for 96 wounded Viet Nam veterans at the Conrad Hilton Hotel was canceled after Hilton vice president Porter Parris decided their presence would depress other patrons. Veterans were from Great Lakes Naval Training Center and reassigned to another restaurant after the decision.
Cloudbursts and violent storms lash west Texas with three inches of rain deluging Midland while Andrews reports six foot torrents. Lightning starts fires in Midland homes and a Pyote cotton warehouse. 2.22 inches fall near Hunt and Guadalupe River runoff expected. Tornado funnel near Odessa unconfirmed. widespread travel disruption and power/telephone outages reported.
Maj. Gen. Delmar E. Wilson of the U S Air Force is awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for two years of service and for directing the search and recovery of the missing U S thermonuclear device off Spain's southeast coast. The citation credits his diplomacy and leadership with earning U S trust from Spanish officials. Wilson, commander of the U S 16th Air Force in Spain, had earlier led the 7th Air Force in Britain and will retire next month.
