Roswell City Councilor Elena Velasquez collapsed as the jury returned a verdict finding Jose Arias guilty of involuntary manslaughter for the 2011 shooting death of Victoria Valesquez-Arias in her West Fourth Street apartment. The defense argued accidental discharge after Arias acquired a gun the day before after a drive by damaged his car.

Roswell resident Andy Deshotel, 92, nicknamed "the man who started World War II," is remembered for his wartime history and lifelong service. Memorial Day honors those who died and those who survived, with Deshotel's story reflecting a complex past.
Born in Palmetto in 1921, Deshotel grew up one of seven children. His self-taught Pentecostal father built a church, bought timberland, cleared 20 acre lots, built houses on each parcel, and rented to 50 percent sharecroppers. His father died young and his blind mother died two years later.
