War News: German Blitzkrieg Push Threatens English Channel

Paris dispatch reports German heavy tanks and motorized infantry driving toward the English Channel in a deepening pocket in northern France and Belgium. Allied positions are described as increasingly perilous with Boulogne Ghent and Calais reportedly captured or encircled.

Diplomas Awarded to 143 Roswell High Seniors

Roswell High School presented diplomas to 143 graduates, the second largest class, as Clarence L. Hinkle of the Board of Education handed them out at the Junior High auditorium. About 1400 attended the ceremony where Rev. F B Howden Jr delivered the address using the theme Paso Por Aqui, urging graduates to guard their ideals and leave a lasting impression on others.

Death of Roswell Pioneer Jas A Dunnahoo at 63

Jas A Dunnahoo died this morning in Roswell at 12:45 after a brief illness. Born November 5, 1882 in Roswell, he served in the Spanish American War with the 11th Cavalry in the Philippine Islands. He lived in California about 25 years before returning to Roswell in 1930. Survived by two daughters in California and one sister in Roswell, with funeral plans pending.

German Claim Great Gains On Trapped Allies

German and Allied troops clashed in Calais as Hitler's air force pounded four channel harbors where reinforcements were landing to break the trap around Allied armies in Flanders. Chamber Urges Attendance at Memorial Day Services

Chamber of Commerce officials urge a large turnout for Memorial Day exercises at South Park next Thursday at 10 30 a.m. The group calls the event a tribute to fallen soldiers and asks all businesses to close from ten to one as a mark of respect and participation by the entire community.

Tigers overpower White Sox in rain shorted tilt

Detroit Tigers defeated the Chicago White Sox 10 to 4 in a 17 hit game halted after one out in the ninth due to rain. Trout, Benton and Tebbetts drove in runs for Detroit while Knott, Appleton, Braun and Tresh pitched in for Chicago. Games ended early in darkness.

Middle Rio Grande Not Worried By Threat Over Water

Officials from the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District in Albuquerque say they will keep storing water in El Vado dam and releasing it for irrigation, despite a veiled threat from Kenneth A Heron and two Tierra Amarilla landowners claiming the water hold infringes their rights.

Fine Exhibits At Roswell Museum

The Chaves County Archaeological Society and the New Mexico Military Institute Camera Club display at the Roswell Museum. The Society shows a collection of New Mexico minerals owned by Fred Miles and a set of early Roswell photographs. The museum opens 1 to 5 PM daily and 7 to 8 PM except Sundays. Visitors are welcome.
