Paris dispatch reports German heavy tanks and motorized infantry driving toward the English Channel in a deepening pocket in northern France and Belgium. Allied positions are described as increasingly perilous with Boulogne Ghent and Calais reportedly captured or encircled.
Roswell High School presented diplomas to 143 graduates, the second largest class, as Clarence L. Hinkle of the Board of Education handed them out at the Junior High auditorium. About 1400 attended the ceremony where Rev. F B Howden Jr delivered the address using the theme Paso Por Aqui, urging graduates to guard their ideals and leave a lasting impression on others.
Jas A Dunnahoo died this morning in Roswell at 12:45 after a brief illness. Born November 5, 1882 in Roswell, he served in the Spanish American War with the 11th Cavalry in the Philippine Islands. He lived in California about 25 years before returning to Roswell in 1930. Survived by two daughters in California and one sister in Roswell, with funeral plans pending.
J. W. Dennis and Mrs. J. P. White submit floral displays to the Chamber of Commerce. A bouquet of roses is praised as very beautiful though no prize is offered for a single rose in the contest.

The Missouri Avenue School Cub Pack will meet at the city park near the school next Monday afternoon at 5 45. The program includes stunts and awards and refreshments. Parents of Cubs are urged to attend.
In Salt Lake City on May 25, Colorado University Boulder Buffaloes built a comfortable lead in the conference track meet. The lead was measured by the number of qualifiers for finals, dispelling doubts that any of the Big Seven schools could prevent CU from winning its third major sports title of the year.
The Eastern New Mexico Area Council based in Roswell reports strong Sea Scout growth with seven ships and 107 Sea Scouts, two more ships imminent, a new Sea Scout base under construction, and an 8.2 percent Sea Scout to Scout membership ratio.
The White House announced President Roosevelt plans a national defense emergency coordination group. It will include government officials and private experts from industry finance agriculture transportation communications labor and consumers. The plan remains in preparedness stage with details undecided.
The U S Army reports a highly secret air plane detector that pierces fog and darkness to warn fighters 15 minutes before enemy planes approach. Brig Gen George W Strong says it is far ahead of any belligerent equipment, with claimed detection distances around 50 miles. Generals Strong and Marshall briefed lawmakers on photos and sketches while seeking 6.3 billion in arms funding.
Rescue workers scoop through wrecked Lima and Callao as Peru recovers from yesterday’s quake. With 249 confirmed dead and over 3,000 injured, thousands are homeless and tent shelters rise as the army aids refugees. Callao and Chorillos suffer heavy damage. Lima reports at least 70 dead. No Americans reported among victims.
Will Robinson will host a limited run of National Park Service color slides titled National Monuments of New Mexico. The exhibit, arranged by M Madeleine McGrath, honors Robinson’s Know Your New Mexico work and will be shown free to local groups in Roswell for a few sessions, under a non profit arrangement.
Rome reports indicate Italy is mobilizing all resources under a new civil order. Conscription, reserve calls, halted liner sailings, stronger blackout drills, and anti Allied sentiment suggest Italy may join Germany in the looming conflict. Foreigners prepare to depart.
A radio program entitled Romance of Business will be broadcast at 7:30 tonight Roswell time, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce of the United States. John H. Mullis is collecting listener counts for Roswell and vicinity. Participants include Merle Thorpe Milo B Kennedy Alfred Sloan and a group of professional actors.
The Pecos Valley Kennel Club offers a $100 reward for information leading to the arrest of the dog poisoner. Several dogs have been poisoned in Roswell recently as authorities seek clues and suspects.
German and Allied troops clashed in Calais as Hitler's air force pounded four channel harbors where reinforcements were landing to break the trap around Allied armies in Flanders. Berlin said it had ringed the Belgian army and the main British expeditionary force, trapping 509,000 to 1,000,000 troops, with Stuka raids hitting Dieppe Dunkerque Ostend and Blankenberge. German sources predicted a wipeout within a week as Allied relief efforts failed.
Funeral services for E. H. Hub Williams will be Sunday at 2:00 PM from Ballard Funeral Chapel conducted by Dr. A. D. Crile. Special songs by Mrs. Otis Brenneman and Mrs. H. P. Saunders. Casket bearers: J. Q. Cummins, Ross L. Malone, Phil Helmig, C. A. Baker, J. C. Peck, Willis Ford. Interment in South Park Cemetery. Williams lived in Roswell 46 years and in Carlsbad seven years prior.
Chamber of Commerce officials urge a large turnout for Memorial Day exercises at South Park next Thursday at 10 30 a.m. The group calls the event a tribute to fallen soldiers and asks all businesses to close from ten to one as a mark of respect and participation by the entire community.
Cincinnati Reds rout St Louis 7 to 2 as Bucky Walters notches his seventh win without defeat. Frank McCormick belts his fifth homer of the year. First game score 78 2 for Cincinnati over St Louis 000 020 000 24 0 to 010 200 31x 78 2.
Detroit Tigers defeated the Chicago White Sox 10 to 4 in a 17 hit game halted after one out in the ninth due to rain. Trout, Benton and Tebbetts drove in runs for Detroit while Knott, Appleton, Braun and Tresh pitched in for Chicago. Games ended early in darkness.
Officials from the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District in Albuquerque say they will keep storing water in El Vado dam and releasing it for irrigation, despite a veiled threat from Kenneth A Heron and two Tierra Amarilla landowners claiming the water hold infringes their rights.
The Chaves County Archaeological Society and the New Mexico Military Institute Camera Club display at the Roswell Museum. The Society shows a collection of New Mexico minerals owned by Fred Miles and a set of early Roswell photographs. The museum opens 1 to 5 PM daily and 7 to 8 PM except Sundays. Visitors are welcome.
