In Chicago, chickens roam a six block north side rebuilding area. Officer Harold Ruther reports 14 birds at one townhouse and 21 at a vacant apartment as neighbors fear the feathered invaders. The birds are held a week then sent to a farm. no thefts or illegal keeping found.
The Supreme Court in a 5 to 3 decision ruled that federal OSHA inspectors may not conduct unannounced inspections without a search warrant. The ruling struck down part of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, limiting 400000 spot checks since 1971. The decision extends the Fourth Amendment protection to commercial premises, confirming warrants are needed before surprise inspections.
The Chaves County Wildlife Federation weighs waiting for a three person board to study a proposed closure of a 12 mile section of Cato Road. The plan would cut access to about 12 000 acres of public lands east of Roswell drawing concerns from federation head Bob Burnett and supporters. The county aims to review the closure at a June 13 meeting with three impartial taxpayers to advise.
Goddard High School plans an 8 p.m. commencement at the Wool Bowl stadium for 302 graduates including 63 honor students. Senior speaker Eileen Hendricks urges independence and education, praises teacher access, and notes student input at school board meetings. She is the daughter of Jerry and Mrs. Hendricks.
House energy conferees rejected a bid to derail pricing reforms and moved toward final approval. The compromise would lift federal controls on new gas from 1985 with about 10 percent annual interim increases, costing consumers about $9 billion through 1985.
