Budget Bureau Approves Hondo Flood Project Near Roswell

The Budget Bureau approved a four million dollar Hondo flood control plan near Roswell and sent it to the Army. State Engineer John Erickson says two dams across the Honda and Rocky Arroyo would help Roswell but not stop last week’s Spring River flood. The project, stalled since seven years, was once opposed by Texas’s Carlsbad Irrigation District for groundwater seepage concerns.

Auto Wreck Damages Tap $37,784 in Three District Court Suits

Three automobile collision cases filed in District Court seek a total of $37,784.09 in damages. The largest suit, Robert E. Rockwell vs. Richard V. Simmons and Lloyd Downey, involves a 1951 Packard and a Downey tractor trailer on U.S. Highway 380 near Roswell, with Rockwell claiming permanent disability and pain and suffering. The Hodges vs. Roswell Transit Lines bus case, centered on a Second and Sea collision on March 18, seeks about $7,000 in damages for injuries and car damage. The Spurs Spurrier versus Lester Omer Boggs suit, filed March 14, requests $1,842.82 for a January 31 collision on N Garden Street.

Two Drivers Hurt In Morning Wreck At Fifth And Richardson

An early morning two car crash at Fifth and Richardson injured both drivers. Louis Sandoval a 50 year old shop foreman from 109 W Til den St was taken to St Marys Hospital after his 1949 Chevrolet collided with a 1950 Kaiser driven by Edna O Hughes 19 a clerk of 520 E Seventh St. Hughes suffered a leg injury and was treated and discharged from Walker Base Hospital. The collision occurred at 7 15 a m yesterday with damage to the right front of the Chevrolet and left front of the Kaiser.

61st NMMI Commencement Scheduled May 29 to June 1

A broken collar bone and rib, plus bruises, plagued an 18 month old girl when she fell from a car as her mother backed out at 1 p.m. The incident happened on Stanton Avenue. The child Marilyn, and her brothers Rickey and Tracey, were in the front seat. The mother Mrs Roy Laub, fainted after handing the baby to a neighbor for help. The baby was taken to a physician by ambulance. The 61st annual NMMI commencement for 232 graduates spans May 29 to June 1 with regimental inspection, drills, a ball, baccalaureate, a memorial service, polo, receptions, and graduation ceremonies on June 1. Valedictorian is Jane B Laverty and salutatorian Xavia Milton Holt Jr. The keynote address will be given by Hiram M Dow.

Flood fight yields hopeful signs for Bonners Ferry

Flood fighters on the Kootenai River reported optimism after days of heavy water and failed dikes. About 8,000 acres of pasture and wheatland flooded, with river levels reaching 12 feet in places. Roughly 500 residents in the lowest area evacuated. no casualties reported so far.

U S senators Clinton Anderson and Dennis Chavez along with Rep A M Fernandez telegrammed Roswell Chamber of Commerce flood control committee chair Stanley Mathis that action is underway to study how to modify controls for tributary and dry arroyo floods in Roswell.
