Bitter Fighting At Crete As Nazis Seize Two Footholds

London May 22 German troops in Crete have taken two footholds from British and Greek defenders as mass aerial invasion continues. Churchill said Nazi parachutists captured Candia but air port remains under British control. Malemi near Canea is in German hands and sea landings were frustrated. Cairo notes indicate Malemi airdrome and surrounding area are held by the enemy, with Allied fire ongoing.

Mullis Suit Stop Capitol Building Seeks Injunction

In Santa Fe a second suit to test the 1941 Capitol Building Act was filed in district court by state senator J. H. Mullis and former senator R. G. Bryant. The complaint seeks an injunction against the office building commission and other state officials over financing the building with rental backed debentures, calling it illegal and a subterfuge to circumvent the constitution. Defendants include Governor Miles and building commission members, treasurer Rex French, state auditor E. D. Trujillo, land commissioner H. R. Rodgers, revenue commissioner J. O. Gallegos, and highway chair P. J. Vidal, with Rodgers Gallegos and Vidal named both personally and as commission members. The governor and Lt. Gov. Ceferino Quintana are also listed. The commission had previously filed a separate action for a declaratory judgment on the act’s validity.

Five Missing in Carlsbad Flood May Be Safe

Five of twelve missing after a Guadalupe Mountains flood left more than 600 homeless in Carlsbad New Mexico, with five still unaccounted for. A 20 foot crest swept Dark Canyon Hackberry Draw and McKitrick Canyon flooding about 20 blocks, while authorities feared possible further rises from Rocky Arroyo and a potential new crest upriver. Red Cross, police, and volunteers assisted victims as hope persisted most missing would turn up safe.

Officers Report Successful Meeting

Local peace officers report a very successful conference here yesterday afternoon conducted by D. A. Bryce head of the El Paso Division of the FBI He was assisted by special agent G H Franklin Law enforcement officers were in attendance from several counties with a total attendance of 34 The conference was the first of a series of quarterly conferences to be held here under the FBI Law Enforcement Officers Mobilization Plan for National Defense Similar meetings are being held all over the United States to enlist the support of peace officers in combating subversive activities

Levelland Bank Robbery Seizes $20533 at First National

In Levelland Texas on May 22 a two gun man robbed First National Bank of $20 533 77 locking 10 employees in the vault. They were released 15 minutes later after the staff called the combination. Police across the south plains and eastern New Mexico set up roadblocks as the robber fled.

Delayed ICC Action on Rio Grande Western Line Abandonment

Santa Fe New Mexico May 22 The interstate commerce commission has postponed for another 20 days final action on the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad abandonment of its Santa Fe to Antonito Colorado branch. State corporation commission chairman Don R Casados said the ICC advised that its prior approval order would be held over to permit the railroad's request.

Roswell Faces Heavy Rain With Limited Damage

Roswell was drenched by 2.25 inches of rain, part of a record monthly total as 1941 rainfall nears historic highs. Streets flooded from Richard son to Main and Third and Fourth streets, but stores largely escaped major damage while Yucca theatre erected a dike to protect the lobby. City engineer Lea Rowland reported no flood threat despite ongoing showers.

Rio Grande Down But Conditions Are Still Critical

Carlsbad in southeastern New Mexico was flooded as Pecos river crests surged after heavy rains. About 600 people were left homeless with more expected as levees along 200 miles of riverfront held but strained. Eddy County Red Cross, state guard and Caswell Neal warned of possible deaths as relief efforts mobilized.

Martinique warned of possible American attack defense plan

In May 22 reports from German occupied Paris La Matin said Martinique defense forces prepared for an American attack. Fort De France would guard Bank of France gold and defenders would blow up the fortress if needed. Naval moves by Bearn and Emile Bertin described as maneuvers with no departure plans.

Weather Conditions May 22 in Southwestern US

Weather reports show additional rains in the last 24 hours across Colorado New Mexico Kansas Oklahoma and western Texas with Pecos valley New Mexico seeing the heaviest rainfall. Upper Grande valley also records over half an inch. Temperatures remain largely unchanged aside from cooler air in the northern plains and no freezing. Unsettled cloudy conditions continue in Pecos valley with chances of thunderstorms tonight and Friday. Funds for Gallup Shiprock Highway Approved in House

The House completed congressional action on the Gallup Shiprock highway bill and sent it to the White House. The measure would authorize an annual $20,000 appropriation for maintenance of the Navajo Reservation segment and the Gallup to Window Rock route in Arizona. The House substitution aligned HR4277 with the Senate passed S1296.

Two Men Returned to Face Grand Larceny Charge

Guy R. Bruce and Paul H. Bushner were brought back to Roswell from Amarillo to answer a grand larceny indictment. Sheriff Frank Young and Police Chief Henry Eller transported them. They allegedly robbed A. T. Cox of 70 dollars at a local rooming house on May 20.

Chicago White Sox top Athletics on Ladies Day

Chicago White Sox beat Philadelphia Athletics 4 to 1 before about 10 000 fans. Johnny Rigney allowed six hits as Chicago built an early lead and held on for the win. Also Browns dump Red Sox 4 1 behind Wagner and late runs, while Detroit and New York and Cleveland Washington were scoreless in parts of their games.

All Missing At Carlsbad Safe

Carlsbad New Mexico May 22 Sheriff Howell Gage said all missing have been found in the flood area. Earlier five Spanish American and Negro children were missing. Flood workers kept a vigil for anyone trapped when a cloud burst sent waters over 20 blocks of the city.

Quiz Contest At Tourist School Tomorrow Night

The Roswell Chamber of Commerce tourist committee hosts a Friday evening quiz at 7 30 featuring Col Tom Boles head of Carlsbad Cavern National Park. Correct answers earn a dime with some worth more and 25 dimes were posted last week. Attendance grew and planners expect a larger crowd for the final session through entertaining, informative questions about Roswell and area attractions.

John Kelly Named State Geologist

John Kelly of Hobbs was named state geologist by Governor Miles, effective June 1. He succeeds A Andreas, who served over four years and was not renewed after his term expired January 1. Kelly, a State School of Mines graduate, has worked as an oil engineer and geologist and recently in Hobbs for state protection umpire Glenn Staley. The governor praised his education and training for oil and gas duties, and Kelly will serve ex officio on the state oil conservation commission alongside the governor and land commissioner H R Rodgers.
