The House voted 322 to 98 to override President Roosevelt and pass the Patman bonus bill despite his warning of currency destruction. The vote left the measure fatefully to the Senate where unanimous consent was sought to set a time for debate, with plans for further speeches and a possible motion to delay.
London reports at the opening of the international wheat conference forewarn of a crisis more serious than 1933 unless action occurs. Andrew Cairns presents a summary noting a world stock glut of about 800 million bushels by August 1, above the 1922-28 average, with European acreages up and markets tight for major exporters. Canada and Argentina expect carryovers to shrink, while Russia may rise slightly but not reemerge as a major exporter. Indianapolis May 22 AP A gaping hole in a concrete wall and a broken wire fence marked a deadly day at the speedway as veteran driver W H Stubby Stubblefield his mechanic Leon Whit taker and Johnny Hannon died during qualifying for the 500 mile race. Thirteen others had already qualified at over 100 mph, while 26 drivers and crewmen have been killed since 1909 and four spectators have died.
Zach Morgan and Fred Morgan were acquitted on instructed verdicts after jurors were directed to find them not guilty by Judge James B. McGhee for obliterating ear marks. This morning Rosalio Reyes, charged with rape, also received an acquittal on an instructed verdict. Don Blevins was convicted yesterday afternoon of selling one neat cattle without owner permission.
Donald McClister aged 23 died at the family home 1006 West College Boulevard Roswell after a two day illness. He was born in Elida New Mexico in 1912 and lived in Roswell since returning from San Angelo Texas. Survived by parents Mr and Mrs R H McClister four sisters Madge Geneva Lenna Roberta and one brother Austin all of Roswell. Funeral services Thursday at two at Talmage Memorial Chapel with Rev Jeffcoat of the Church of Christ in charge. Interment South Park.
Las Vegas New Mexico May 22 AP Early Miller an inmate at the state penitentiary testified for the state in Jim Poe burglary trial. Miller said he blew the safe while Poe stood guard and that he received 480 dollars of the 1900 robbery loot.
Washington May 22 AP Four government agencies the veterans administration the war and navy departments and the Smithsonian Institution were disclosed today to have applied for approximately 54 5 million of work relief money to carry out improvements on their properties in 27 states Hawaii the canal zone and the District of Columbia. The war department also asked 4 5 million for construction of a dam at San Miguel New Mexico.
In the National League scores, New York beat Pittsburgh 9 to 2 with Parmelee and Man cuso batting, Blanton and Grace handling pitching. Brooklyn was blanked by Cincinnati 4 to 3 as Earnshaw Babich and Lopez Johnson Brennan Campbell took the mound. Boston Chicago game postponed by rain. Philadelphia defeated St Louis 2 to 1 with Bivin Todd Haines Davis combining on the battery.
St Louis beat Washington 6 to 3 with Weiland Walkup and Heath contributing. Detroit prevailed 4 to 0 over Philadelphia with Auker and Cochrane handling duties. Chicago fell to New York 13 to 5 as Jone s Vance and Sewell topped Allen Jorgens. Cleveland defeated Boston 12 to 5 behind Pearson L Brown C Brown and Pytlak W Ferrell R Ferrell.

Springfield May 22 Acting quickly to break the relief crisis the Illinois House passed the administration bill by 77 votes to raise the sales tax from two to three percent to fund the states relief rolls.
Four Americans advanced to the fourth round of the British amateur golf championship at St Annes on the Sea led by William Lawson Little Jr. of San Francisco the defending champion. Eric Fiddian beat T Suffern Tailer Jr. 3 and 1 while G L Q Henriques subdued Harvey Shaffer 3 and 1. Little defeated J Zacharias 4 and 3 for the day’s highlight as Captain Bullock-Webster Topping and Chapman also advanced with solid wins.
The Navy reported it cannot determine if a wind gust or airship Macons structural failure caused the loss off the California coast. Secretary Swanson approved the court inquiry’s finding that no offenses were committed or blame incurred, praising officers and men for their handling, while noting the craft was a complete loss except for a few life preservers.
Harper Gatton of Madisonville Kentucky was elected president of Kiwanis International today in San Antonio Texas. He succeeds Dr William J Carrington of Atlantic City.

Senator Adams of Colorado and Senators Sheppard and Connally of Texas introduced a bill in the Senate to grant approval for extending terms of the Rio Grande compact between Colorado New Mexico and Texas. The compact was signed February 12 1929 at Santa Fe New Mexico.
The VFW Post in Portales named for the late Sen Bronson M Cutting will be installed tonight. Members from Clovis plan to attend the meeting reflecting the community’s honoring of the senator.
