French and Belgian troops seized Kolwezi from rebels as reports said about 100 foreigners were killed. Observers counted at least 58 bodies in the streets while up to 1,500 white residents awaited evacuation.
The Bureau of Land Management approves about 500000 dollars for a four year study on antelope habitat needs in southeastern New Mexico west of Roswell. The effort also tests fence modifications for livestock control and tracks antelope movements with an initial transplant of 75 animals and plans to move 350 more into federal grazing allotments.
State officials at the Roswell Correctional Center dedication stress turning residents into taxpayers and workers. They note education and job skills help accused offenders regain dignity while costs per inmate run lower than at state prisons.
At Orly Airport eight miles south of Paris, three terrorists armed with submachine guns and grenades opened fire on Israel bound passengers. A half hour gun battle left three terrorists dead and one police officer killed. El Al security joined police. three passengers and a stewardess wounded, all non life threatening. Roswell Independent School District officials host a reception to honor 16 retiring employees, with district leaders praising long service and contributions to students and programs. The event occurred today as part of a district recognition program.
City Manager Robert J. Owen said 65 people applied for Roswell police chief, up from 30 to 35. He will review Monday and narrow to interview candidates, with a mid June decision anticipated. Acting Chief Carroll M Teague has led since April 28 after LM Hall resigned to run for sheriff.
