Opposition voices rally against Lea County nuclear storage plan
At a Friday Santa Fe legislative committee hearing, Chaves County dairy and oil and gas representatives joined Holtec International and local allies to oppose an interim high level nuclear waste storage site proposed mid way between Hobbs and Carlsbad. They warned of disaster risks to industry and water resources, noting local wells within a gunshot of the site and pointing to a lack of geological fit. Public meetings continue with comments due by July 30 and NRC review slated for 2020. supporters argue it would supply a national solution, create 2.4 billion in investment and jobs, while opponents stress safety and regional impact.
