Levi Plant Will Start Production In Roswell

Levi Strauss begins production at its Roswell plant with about 50 employees and a plan to grow to 500 workers on two shifts. First shipment of slim fit white jeans is due in three to four weeks, with training lasting four to 20 weeks and an investment of at least 1000 dollars per employee.

Amarillo Tanker Crashes at Amarillo AFB Killing Five

A KC135 tanker from the 909th Refueling Squadron crashed on landing at Amarillo Air Force Base. Four crew members Capt. Thomas W. Burt Capt. Max J. Katz Maj. Richard H. Doughty and T Sgt Harry L. Alexander died along with a passenger. It was the base's first fatal crash as operations wind down.

Mark Howell Principal Takes Oklahoma Post

Larry Ellison, principal of Mark Howell School for the past three years, resigns to become superintendent of Reed public schools in Oklahoma. A native of Oklahoma, he earned a bachelor from Southwestern State and a master’s from Eastern New Mexico University. He previously taught at Pueblo Junior High and served as assistant principal there. He says he will miss Roswell and its people but seeks greater opportunity in his new role.

Beating Case Ends With Acquittal For Youse In Carrizozo

John Youse of Roswell was found not guilty of battery against Bob Crosby Jr. of Ruidoso. Panky, Youse son-in-law, was fined 100 dollars and sentenced to 30 days in Lincoln County Jail after pleading guilty and being tried separately. The four and a half hour trial centered on an April 22 beating at Crosby’s store following a December car incident in Ruidoso. Crosby testified Youse aided Panky, while Panky described the motive as retribution for past grievances.

Neely Ordered to Play for Oilers to Chase Pro Football

The U S Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Ralph Neely must play with the Houston Oilers of the AFL to compete in pro football. The decision reverses a lower court ruling that his contract belonged to the Dallas Cowboys of the NFL. Neely is a former Oklahoma tackle who played with Dallas last season.

Water Meter Installations Lag in Pecos Valley Area

Water meter work runs well behind schedule with less than 20 percent of the 1,700 meters installed. PVACD watermaster Wayne Lampert warned residents will miss the January 1 deadline set by a court order requiring meters on wells in the Roswell Artesian Basin. About 414 meters are in place and 640 more on order. The board approved a 1966 1967 budget of 285 427 and granted five conservation loan applications totaling several thousand dollars for meters and related programs.

Bruce Poorbaugh Receives Distinguished Service Award

Bruce Poorbaugh was presented with a distinguished service award by the Chamber of Commerce President's Club today. He earned the honor by accumulating 1,000 service points for the club during the year at the Chamber's Stockholders Breakfast at Roswell Inn.
