Report notes clear signs of oil expansion as drillers announce sure indications of field potential. Industry officials and local observers cite increased activity and rising exploration confidence in the region.
The Trenton limestone well near Roswell has reached ninety five feet in drilling with fresh oil indications and abundant natural gas. Canfield, supervising, says deeper oil sand may lie beneath while salt water intrusion remains controlled by casing.
The May 18 dispatch notes President Truman forwarding Commissioner Garfield’s complete five thousand page Standard Oil investigation report to Congress. It details way-bills, railroad tariffs, secret agreements, and through rates aimed to show concealment and selective pricing by Standard Oil and allied railroads.
The Victory Cadets opened the season by beating Henrietta in the first game. The contest showcased early strong play from the Cadets as they secured the win on the road.
A one hour baseball game between Cadets and Henrietta Texas at the Military Institute grounds yesterday afternoon ended two to one. Kennard walked and Brail and Caldwell hit to load bases, with Baker’s long fly scoring a run. Henrietta tied and then led briefly on a W Wright hit and home team errors. Final score followed by an official score and umpire R. M. Parsons.
May 17 report from St. Petersburg notes public opinion heated over how the emperor and government will confront the lower house. Constitutional Democrats see bureaucracy preparing for a bold clash, with rumors of a coup by Witte and a possible two month period of parliamentary venting before dissolution.
Oil men meet at the Commercial Club to form the Chaves County Oil Mining District and a seven member executive committee to protect placer oil claim locations. The group adopts rules and a governing charter with more than two hundred signatures collected by noon.
A $10,000 automobile containing $24,000 in bonds and valuable papers was stolen on Broadway near 42nd Street. Owner J. H. Clarke left the car unoccupied to enter a nearby restaurant. the thief jumped in as it started and sped away, eluding pursuers.
Mills Fuller aged 66 was hanged at 5 30 am in Butte Montana for the murder of Henry Callinan on October 24 1904. Death was instantaneous with two thousand witnesses. Fuller made no statement though petitions for clemency cited his age and health. The governor refused to commute. He was suspected in three other murders but not convicted.
Evi dence of stock presentation by coal companies to railroad officials was adduced at the Interstate Commerce Commission session in Philadelphia. E. J. Cleave testified he owned 250 shares in Cochran Coal Co obtained as partial payment for land, and he had been offered stock but declined. F L Sheppard of the United Railway of New Jersey said he owned stock in several mining companies.
The funeral of the late Andrew Axelson will be held tomorrow at 8 30 in the morning at the Allery undertaking parlors. Rev C Hill will officiate with special music by Eva Nelson Nina Rabb Rodkey Norvell Reed Stevens. The band will play opening and closing numbers and escort the body to the station.
A warning advises inspecting cement sidewalk work before awarding a contract. The notice identifies W. W. Petty as the contractor to be cautious of and suggests verifying workmanship before proceeding with bids.
After the jury was empaneled in the forgery case against Ennis Post, he withdrew his not guilty plea and the trial was halted. The sentence is pending and he remains out on bond. Post allegedly forged C. C. Martin’s name on a check two years ago at Morrison Bros. He is about 18. In a separate matter, Lincoln Whiteman withdrew his not guilty plea on a tobacco sale to minors and pleaded guilty this morning.
