Peabody Massachusetts faces millions in losses after a dam burst flood. Flood Submerges Boston Leather Center Injuring and Evacuating

Floodwaters from a dam breach surged into the central business district near a major leather industry hub northeast of Boston. Dozens of factories and stores flooded. 1,000 leather workers faced layoffs. 150 Coast Guard personnel aided evacuations as 50 families were moved from homes. One elderly woman injured. two rescues reported. City officials estimate heavy damage and delayed recovery.

Suspected Quadruple Killer Paroled Ex-Con Captured Near Suspect Slayings

In Moultrie Georgia a 45 year old paroled inmate Tom Williams was captured near a swamp edge after a three day manhunt for ties to four brutal slayings. Williams was taken to an undisclosed jail as the community expressed relief and law enforcement reported the capture.

Wind and Fire Hurt New Mexico Amid Severe Storms

Severe storms lashed New Mexico with three tornadoes. hail, heavy rain, and dry lightning sparked small fires in the Gila National Forest. Tornadoes disrupted telephone service, bridges were washed out, and towns faced flooding and power outages as firefighters tackled new blazes and authorities warned of more lightning.

Rev Austin Dillon Reappointed Pastor at Roswell Church

Rev. Austin H. Dillon was returned as pastor of the First Methodist Church in Roswell at the closing of the annual Carlsbad conference. He begins his fourth year in Roswell, serving since June 1951, with Rev. Nathan Pipkin remaining as assistant.

One Million Penny Drive Aids Eastern New Mexico Medical Center

Four thousand four hundred fifty four pennies were turned in Friday by grade schools as part of the One Million Penny drive. The total to date reaches 274 618 pennies toward the 100 000 goal to fund part of the children's wing at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center. The drive will continue in city county schools next fall until the goal is met.

Medals Highlight Armed Forces Day at Walker Base

About 15 000 visitors attended Walker Air Force Base fifth Armed Forces Day observance. A noon to 6 pm open house featured aircraft displays and a five o clock retreat review by 1 200 cadets and airmen. Medals were awarded posthumously to Lt Lonnie Parker by Brig Gen Thomas C Musgrave Jr. The Accolade from President Eisenhower was read to Mrs Parker. Janet Parker received the Air Medal for superb airmanship in a UN mission in Korea. Additional honors went to Capt James Adams Major Alfred Morris A2c Alton Starbird A2c Ronald Johnson M Sgt Olaf Moen Lt Curt Neukath and S Sgt Dewey Hatfield. Visitors browsed aircraft on the flight line and viewed displays including survival gear and a portable field hospital.

Gila Wilderness Crash Kills Two Men Inquest Set

An inquest is scheduled at 3 p.m. in Silver City to review the deaths of Donald Windy and William A. Sleer, El Paso men killed when their light plane crashed on the Gila wilderness border after taking off from a Campbell’s ranch strip. Sheriff pins blame on overload and lack of power to clear canyon walls.

School bonds approved in Gallup voters approve bonds for high school loan

Gallup voters in School Districts 3 and 4 pass a 63 to 10 vote authorizing $100000 in bonds to pay the loan on the new Gallup High School building. The funds will also finance two new rooms at an elementary school.

French Air Strikes Threaten Vietminh If Vietminh Do Not Repair Airstrip

In Indochina, Paris warned it would resume heavy air attacks if the Vietminh do not repair the Dien Bien Phu airstrip to speed evacuations. General Vo Nguyen Giap was given until midnight to accept. Paris favored pressuring toward Son La and the Red River Delta.

Rice Sentenced to 5 to 7 Years in Penitentiary

John Calvin Rice, convicted of manslaughter in the deaths of Mrs. Ruby M. Byrd and her son near Roswell on December 25, 1951, is to serve five to seven years at the Santa Fe penitentiary after the New Mexico Supreme Court upheld the district court. Sheriff Bill High, Carlsbad, Eddy County, transported him to the state prison over the weekend. The district court decision was affirmed on appeal.

Keith Hall of Portales was elected president at the New Mexico Junior Chamber of Commerce convention in Las Vegas. Delegates chose Albuquerque as the 1955 convention site and four vice presidents were elected: Ralph Fuller Clovis Bob Drobel Roswell Jim Noble Las Vegas and Wayne Bowles Santa Fe.
