PVAC board approves a budget of 100,958 for the fiscal year July 1, 1956 to June 30, 1957. The levy remains 22 mills, same as the current year, to fund the district operations.
Gov. John F. Simms and ex Gov. Edwin L. Mechem agreed most New Mexico press is informing citizens but coverage of state government affairs is lacking. They spoke at Sigma Delta Chi meeting amid calls to cover other offices and funding for capitol press staff.
George S. Pupich a freshman at New Mexico Military Institute earned an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Brig General Richard H Carmichael announced Pupich will report to Denver on July 9 to begin training He is expected to be the Academy s number one quarterback next season Pupich came to NMMI from San Fernando California and made a name on the Bronco football team as quarterback guard on basketball and track athlete pursuits at the Frontier Conference meet were noted
A Royal Canadian Air Force jet struck the Grey Nuns of the Cross convalescent home near Ottawa injuring and killing many. Fifteen people died, most aged and bedridden nuns, with 11 missing and presumed dead among the residents and crew. Survivors included 22 nuns and a priest, and two workers.
Anne Marriott was named valedictorian, Glynelle Hubbard salutatorian, and John Bassett best all around student at the Roswell High School scholarship ceremony. The seniors were recognized for their academic and extracurricular achievements as Robert H. Nelson and faculty presented the awards.
About 200 New Mexico Masons will join a three day York Rite session starting Sunday May 20 with dignitaries from Texas Oklahoma Arizona and New Mexico. John Temple Rice heads the list of guests with a banquet Monday at 6 00 pm at the Woman's Club and tickets urged before noon. Over 1 000 masons are located in the area.
In Chicago the maximum security wing at Cook County jail houses 21 death row inmates who now keep a blue parakeet as a good luck omen. The bird escaped through bars into the wing of awaiting death and two executions were postponed after the avian intrusion. Warden Jack Johnson allowed a plastic cage for the bird.
A Clovis woman Beulah Oestermeyer age 49 was thrown from a car and killed in a rollover on U.S. 60 four miles west of Fort Sumner raising New Mexico’s traffic death toll to 120 for the year. Her husband A. C. Ostermeyer 48 was injured and hospitalized in Fort Sumner. The crash occurred on a curve as their car rolled four times.
Oklahoma Governor Raymond Gary said he asked the State Highway Commission to prepare plans for a $30 million road program for a six month period beginning July 1.
Eisenhower led Kefauver by roughly two to one in Nebraska based on incomplete returns from 1,383 of 2,127 precincts. The race showed no opposition on either party ballot and write ins were inconsequential.
Santa Fe lawmakers postpone a two day interim committee on public finances meeting to May 24 25. The delay follows the death of the mother of Dr John Dale Russell director of the Board of Educational Finance whose talk on finances of higher education was planned.

In Tulsa Municipal Court Claude Harrell 39 faced assault and battery charges. After a $10 fine was imposed the judge spotted the defendant's bruised wife and changed the sentence to a $100 fine and 30 days in jail.
Graham, 24, awaits execution week of Aug 26 after bombing the United Airlines flight that killed his mother and 43 others. He was sentenced by Judge Joseph M. McDonald in Denver and may pursue a new-trial appeal if the Colorado Supreme Court accepts jurisdiction.
