President Roosevelt urged Congress to approve a 1 182 billion emergency defense plan and target 50 000 war planes. He linked the push to a modern army and regional defense while emphasizing not hindering plane deliveries to allies.
The White House said President Roosevelt sent another communication to Premier Mussolini to prevent spread of the European war. White House press secretary Stephen Early described it as part of a series, with Ambassador Phillips relaying views to Mussolini. The move follows prior talks with the Italian ambassador. The administration warns Americans to leave Italy and shifts embarkation points from Genoa to Bordeaux, Spain, and Portugal.
Rome May 16 A British correspondent reports on the method used by Britain to halt and search Mediterranean ships under contraband control. The practice strains Rome's relations with the British French allies and provokes Italian anger. The observer witnessed a typical incident aboard the Italian liner Egro traveling from Naples to Piraeus.
The Red Cross relief drive in the county expands with subscriptions from Dexter Hagerman and Lake Arthur toward a $960 goal. Donors may leave gifts with local coordinators or at First National Bank in Roswell. emphasis on small gifts from 50 cents to 50 dollars and urgent need for immediate support.
State comptroller Sebastian turned over Hobbs audits to district attorney George L. Reese of Carlsbad for action on several thousand dollars in charges by former Hobbs city officials. A new audit covers Apr 1 to Sep 30, 1939, adding $606.48 in legal fees and travel reimbursements to Don G. McCormick charged to acting mayor C W Jobe, the city council, and former clerk treasurer R E Alsup. Earlier charges targeted Mayor Ross Walker, the council, and Alsup for legal services tied to sewer and city hall bonds, claimed duplicative of bond firm contracts. The matter was released with Sebastian advising Reese it was in his hands for action.
Virgil Cates and Bailey Prickett each received nine to twelve months in the penitentiary after pleading guilty to taking an automobile without consent. Previous deferment ended as charges for possessing a female minor for immoral purposes were filed in J P court. Hubbard received a suspended two to three year sentence for stealing a rock crusher.
Roswell resident Mrs Amy Ann Hubbert Gill died after an extended illness at the home of Elmer Gill in Austin Texas. She was born June 15 1850 in Cassville Missouri and moved to Roswell in 1893. Survived by daughter Mrs Willard F Hird of Lincoln Nebraska son Elmer Gill of Austin and 14 grandchildren 12 great grandchildren. Funeral services planned for Saturday. Talmage Mortuary in charge.
A steel maul fragment flew off its head and pierced William Apperson's throat while he split pile butts on a Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad bridge near Monarch Colorado. The 30 year old died en route to Salida Hospital. His body was sent to Aztec for his widow and daughter.
Germans push on the southern Bel gian line crossing the Meuse at Namur and Sedan but face stout Allied opposition. Allies express satisfaction at current positions as the initial German offensive shows signs of waning, with limited information available.
Sen. Holt, longtime critic of New Deal policies, failed to win renomination in West Virginia. The 35 year old veteran, who opposed court reform and WPA practices, finished third as Harley M. Kilgore secured the Democratic nomination for the U S Senate with republican challenger Thomas B. Sweeney facing defeat.
In Tucumcari New Mexico on May 16 the defense pressed the death by own action theory to explain the 1938 death of Mrs John H Sanford as her husband Dr John Sanford faces a second trial. Dr M P Beam testified autopsy showed poison enough to kill 15 people. The state accuses Sanford of poisoning his wife July 13 1938 at Santa Rosa. Witnesses described the wife’s belief she would die and concerns over security of their daughter June. Sanford was sentenced to death in the first trial but won a new trial on appeal.
The L F D school graduation exercises will be held Friday night at 8 o'clock. R. M. Cookson, county school superintendent, will deliver the commencement address. J E Prichard is valedictorian and Cecil Hensley is salutatorian, with graduates Dorthea McCraw Penzil Pack Jackie Isler Doris Palmer Vernie Ray Boggs and Wanda Eberhart.
The New Mexico Young Democrats open their state convention tomorrow at two at the Armory on West 5th with about 1,000 delegates expected. The event runs through Saturday, with state officers to be elected for two years. Chaves county backs Paul Case for president and James M. H. Callender of Roswell for secretary. Gov. Miles will speak at a Friday barbecue at Cahoon Park hosted by Harry Thorne. Roswell school band to play before opening. Roswell merchants urged to display welcome signs.
Chicago Cubs downed the Boston Bees 5 to 4 to extend their winning streak to four as Glen Russell homered in the seventh. Each side scored twice in the eighth. Lee and Hartnett shared duties for Chicago while Sullivan Piechota Lopez worked for Boston. Rain halted the Reds Dodgers game in the first fourth inning with Cincinnati leading 2 to 1.
In a delayed schedule the Boston at St Louis game and Philadelphia at Detroit were postponed due to rain. New York at Chicago was postponed as well while Washington at Cleveland faced cold conditions. Gatehouse and Desautels Kennedy and Swift mentioned but unclear roles.
Oasis school held closing exercises last night with Mrs. Threet in charge and Manuel Oracion assisting. County superintendent Cookson delivered the principal talk as Patsy Van Doren and Bo McCarter received perfect attendance certificates. The Rhythm band, directed by Oracion, performed several numbers while Floyce Grostwail read Over The Bannister and Frances Martinez gave a reading. The ensemble presented an operetta A Box of Dolls and featured folk dancing and three Spanish songs by the students. Mrs Threet expressed thanks to patrons and announced the school would close this week.
Fierce hand to hand fighting erupts in Louvain as British forces counterattack Germans on the eastern edge of the town. In late afternoon British infantry press three assaults to drive Germans from the outskirts while both sides shell fortifications and push artillery over the town. Across the Meuse front, French and British air forces claim air superiority as German forces push toward Sedan and Rastatt with long range bombardments. The war reports note heavy tolls, suspensions of eastern French trains, and a massive, fast moving front from Antwerp to Sedan with around 600000 troops engaged while American graves at Romagne are referenced.
Swiss and German authorities seal the Rhine frontier from Basel to Lake Constance, restricting rail freight and even blocking Swiss peasants from crossing near Schaffhausen to tend fields. Paris says French commander in Sedan sector claims mastery and aims to regain full front control within a week. Berlin reports flag atop Longwy Citadel, but headquarters confirmation pending.
Jim Young, son of Mr and Mrs E E Young of Roswell, a freshman at Abilene Christian College in Abilene Texas, earned the Garfield Scholarship Award for maintaining a 90 average in his work.
L. M. Magby applies for a four room frame stucco house at 410 South Ohio with a $1000 permit. Kipling Estate seeks roof repair at 214 North Main for $180. Pedro R. Franco requests an addition of two rooms at 602 East Albuquerque for $300.
A delegation of Roswell and Hagerman bankers will fly to Albuquerque tomorrow morning on Continental Air Lines to attend the state bankers convention there Friday and Saturday. They include J. F. Hinkle and Mr. and Mrs. Claude Hobbs of Roswell and Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Losey of Hagerman. A reservation on the plane was made by Harry Leonard of Roswell, who is also traveling to Albuquerque.
The Chamber of Commerce tourist committee will meet at seven tonight to discuss plans for entertaining visitors this summer.
In San Francisco on May 16 union strife hit Greyhound lines as the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen ordered a strike of bus drivers in seven states. They protested Greyhound’s refusal to recognize a national labor relations board ruling designating the trainmen as bargaining agent for drivers. Company spokesmen said they would honor the contract with the Amalgamated Association while awaiting court review.
