Charlie Ward III Returns to Mound in 3A Championship Drive
In a Roswell 3A regional final, Charlie Ward III, sidelined 51 days by a right arm issue, was summoned from the bullpen by his father coach Charlie Ward II to close out the New Mexico Military Institute Colts against Cobre High. Ward III, a 2002 NMMI transfer, had not pitched since March but contributed a 1-2-3 inning while his team held an 8-4 lead after J. J. Donovan’s earlier homer helped NMMI. Ward II spoke of belief in his son as the cadets aimed for back-to-back state titles despite the lingering arm discomfort.
