Moscow reports the Lunik 9 spacecraft reached the Moon but failed to achieve a soft landing as hoped. Tass says the 3,250-pound craft landed in the Sea of Clouds at 10:10 p.m. and gained valuable data for future soft landing efforts.
Robert Glenn Thompson a former Air Force enlisted man who confessed to spying for Russia for six years was sentenced to 30 years in prison by U S District Judge Walter Bruchhausen in Brooklyn Thompson bowed his head and closed his eyes as the sentence was read The judge noted the penalty could be death or life imprisonment but fixed a 30 year term
Maj. Gen. Robert Preston Taylor, United States Air Force Chief of Chaplains, will deliver the Baccalaureate at NMMI during the 72nd annual commencement May 28-30 with U S Senator Clinton Anderson giving the graduation address.
AP reports heavy contact with a Viet Cong battalion near Bac Lieu as 16 South Vietnamese soldiers and one American wounded. Sixteen Viet Cong killed and 10 captured, US air strikes neutralizing positions. Separate daylight attack on a textile plant near Thu Duc left five regional-force soldiers dead and four wounded. A US Marine at Da Nang was wounded by an arrow. No North Vietnam air raids reported.
President Johnson told viewers that Communist China aims to erode U.S. ability to aid Asia, vowing they will fail. He spoke in the East Room ahead of a White House meeting with editorial cartoonists and offered unconditional talks to end the Vietnam war. He outlined three war faces and pressed for economic development in South Vietnam while signaling aid could extend to North Vietnam after peace.
Mrs. Ruby Keller a Pecos Valley Lodge cook fired March 22 appeals to the State Personnel Board. Hearing scheduled May 20 in Santa Fe follows her complaint to the New Mexico Commission on Alcoholism about alleged misconduct by manager George Durand and assistant manager Pete Dunne at the Roswell special hospital. Durand and Dunne now serve as lodge counselors under new manager J. D. Page appointed April 1, 1965.
The Senate voted 66 to 19 against an amendment requiring federal registrars sent into Southern states under the Negro voting rights bill to enroll voters in line with state law. In London, the Evening Standard says a Kennedy White House bid may have started in the U.S.
A storm area moved through southeastern New Mexico producing heavy rain and large hail in Roswell. Rain measured .28 inches at Walker AFB with damage to several light aircraft. the weather bulletin warned Tornadoes and severe storms for a 120 mile wide strip from Carlsbad to Childress Texas.
The State Board of Pharmacy will consider whether to permit Ben F. Cathy, owner and operator of Five Point Drugs, 1125 S Main St, to continue in business at its meeting June 7 8. Cathy was convicted in U S District Court last week of dispensing narcotics without a prescription and was sentenced to two years probation. Cathy and Gary W Hamill were accused of selling 100 quarter grain morphine sulphate tablets to a federal narcotics agent. They were arrested Jan 14, 1964 after nearly 10 months under surveillance.
Two U S soldiers were killed in rebel territory during a skirmish amid rising tensions in the Dominican Republic. Rebels warned they would attack the Americans if the occupied power plant was not abandoned, while peace talks with the OAS considered a constitutional restoration and potential inter American police involvement.
