Black group hopes to bridge divide in immigrant blacks
Washington civil rights advocates warn of a cultural divide between American-born blacks and a rapidly growing immigrant black population from Africa and the Caribbean. The 1980–2000 period saw a 31 percent rise in blacks overall, while Afro Caribbean and African-born communities surged sevenfold. The National Coalition on Black Civic Participation hosted a conference to discuss bridging gaps, education, housing, and health disparities, with leaders noting shared struggles and the need for outreach including bilingual voter programs.
