Fliers Strike North Vietnam Missile Sites Near Haiphong

U S jet pilots knocked out two Soviet built missile sites in North Viet Nam and chased off MIG17s in MIG Alley about 35 miles from China's frontier. A4 Skyhawks hit a surface to air site near Haiphong and F105s faced 11 missiles while the campaign pressed bridges and highways targets to cut supply routes to Hanoi and Haiphong.

19th New Mexico Square Dance Festival draws large crowd

Nearly 1,500 square dancers from Florida to California joined the 19th annual New Mexico Square Dance Festival at Rui doso Saturday night. About 600 spectators watched as participants ranged from grade schoolers to a recent retiree in Alamogordo.

Group Plans Option on MBS Radio

A Delaware corporation formed by businessmen aims to acquire an option on the Mutual Broadcasting System by July 1. John P. Fraim of L. M. Berry & Co will lead Mutual Industries Inc. with Neil F. Campbell and Loren M. Berry as board members. The network, owned by Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Co. since 1960, serves 515 radio stations with news and public affairs.

Plant Opening Delayed One Week In Roswell

Levi Strauss plant operations manager JE Grammier said the Roswell facility’s planned opening is delayed about a week due to missing machinery. He will continue interviewing applicants this week as about 18 supervisors and trainers have already been hired.

Johnson Hosts Mexico's Foreign Minister at LBJ Ranch

President Johnson hosted Antonio Carrillo Flores at the LBJ Ranch in Texas for a social breakfast as the leader neared the end of a Texas weekend. Carrillo traveled from Washington with his wife and daughter and left later the same day. Also at the ranch were Gov. Connally and Mrs. Connally with Lynda Bird Johnson and her escort, George Hamilton.

Ford Slows Car Output in May to Reduce Inventories

Ford Motor Co cut May car production from 261000 to 242000 while keeping truck output at 50000. The company will trim Saturday overtime at several plants to lower output, and none of its 17 assembly plants will shift to short work weeks. Chrysler and American Motors also reported no cutbacks. GM already idled eight plants for days in May.

Air Force says Hanoi supply routes cut after raids

Air Force spokesman reports three weeks of raids have severed main road and rail routes between Hanoi and Hai Phong and toward Red China. Photographs show destroyed bridges and highways from four directions. One F105 Thunderchief was downed over Cao Neng bridge. pilot missing in action, total US losses in North Vietnam at 232. B52s hit Viet Cong area near Cambodia, 70 miles northwest of Saigon.

Hopeful End To Tucson Cancer Patient Dies After Experimental Transfer

Robert Allen, 29, died in Tucson after an experimental tissue transfer for osteogenic sarcoma at Roswell Park. His surgeon, Dr. T E A von Dedenroth, said despite hypnosis therapy and optimism Allen believed he could recover. Allen’s death follows the death of Harry Griffith, 63, of Flourtown, Pa., who underwent the same procedure eight weeks earlier. The Roswell Park spokesman cautioned the method was highly experimental and of little value, though some knowledge gained may aid cancer research. Allen, a former Illinois football player and insurance man, is survived by his widow and three children.

Water project in the southwest eyed at 1.6 billion

Colorado River states urged a sweeping water development program including dams in Arizona and studies on importing water from other basins. The plan was discussed at a House Interior subcommittee hearing as part of proposed legislation authorizing the project.

Secretary of State Dean Rusk assured a Senate hearing that elections would be held in Viet Nam this September. He defended U.S. involvement and faced questions from Senators Fulbright Morse and others about Ky and the timing of elections while stressing the legality of U.S. actions in support of South Viet Nam.

China reports hydrogen bomb test in western China

Peking Radio announced that China had exploded a thermonuclear device, its third nuclear test, conducted Sunday in western China. The 20 000 ton TNT equivalent blast follows two earlier atomic tests in 1964 and 1965, all in Sinkiang province near the Soviet border.

New Heat Record Set in Roswell and Southwest

Unseasonably hot conditions Sunday pushed Roswell to a 98 degree high, a May record surpassing the 14 year old 97. Carlsbad reached 99, Presidio 102, Albuquerque 90, Santa Fe 83, Amarillo 94, and El Paso 92 as regional heat spread statewide.
