Early voting starts for 2006 primary in Chaves County
Voters may begin early voting Tuesday at the former District Court location in the Chaves County Administrative Center 1 St. Mary's Place with hours 8 to 5 on weekdays through June 2 and 10 to 6 on Saturdays May 20 to June 3. An alternate site opens May 20 at Roswell Mall 4501 N Main St noon to 8 Tue-Fri and 10 to 6 Saturdays. Absentee ballot requests due June 2. call 624-6614.

Fiesta weekend games and results at Roswell event

Leadership Roswell forum set for Fifth District race
Candidates for Fifth District judge Com mission sheriff and area legislative seats were invited to a Leadership Roswell Alumni Association forum Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church Roswell. Female guard released after 10 hour prison standoff
A 10 hour hostage standoff at California State Prison Sacramento ended with the release of correctional officer Sheila Mitchell uninjured after Michael David Watson, 41, released her around 5 p.m. The incident began when Watson seized Mitchell at about 7 a.m. and was carried out with a 6 inch metal knife.

Firefighters gain on refuge fire at Bosque del Apache
Firefighters expect full containment of a human caused blaze at the Bosque del Apache refuge by Saturday night. The 4 819 acre fire was 70 percent contained with 25 firefighters securing perimeters mop ping hot spots and burning debris piles. Wind fanned the fires in two locations, investigators said the Marcial Fire was human caused but exact origin unclear. Crews near Shiprock watched for hot spots from a 200 acre fire that burned a barn and power lines.
