McNamara halves airborne alert for B52 bombers

Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara ordered a reduction in the continuous airborne alert of B52 bombers, telling the House Appropriations Committee the radar warning system now suffices to defend the fleet. A portion remains on alert, with about 50 percent kept on 15 minute readiness, while the rest could be mobilized if needed.

Red Cross Says It Can Offer Little Help For POWs In Vietnam

Geneva AP The International Red Cross told Averell Harriman the organization cannot protect American prisoners in Vietnam due to political barriers. North Vietnam, a Red Cross member, refuses to cooperate claiming prisoners belong to the Viet Cong. Harriman cited 227 missing or detained Americans, 33 known as prisoners, as Hanoi refuses to recognize Geneva Conventions.

Berkeley Said Haven For Reds

A California Senate committee charged UC Berkeley under President Clark Kerr with becoming a Communist haven and center for sexual deviation. Kerr denied the report as distortions and noted no current university employees are listed as Communists. The panel cited the campus as pivotal to antiwar activity and alleged sexual decadence and lewd themes on campus under Kerr.

Ribicoff Reports 8.7 Million Car Recalls In Six Years

Sen. Abraham Ribicoff said in Washington that 8,700,225 automobiles were recalled for defects over six years, out of about 47 million produced. He noted 18.5 percent of cars from the four major firms had defects, many not safety related, and urged Detroit’s Big Four to share recall data with his highway safety subcommittee. He praised GM Ford Chrysler for prompt cooperation.

New York AP reports a battered market staging a comeback as General Motors says it will resume normal production Monday. The Dow fell 5.23 to 894.54 by 3 PM with 10.87 million shares traded. GM rose to 87.87 after an earlier low near 86.00.

Brady and Hindley convicted in Moors murders case

Ian Brady convicted of three murders and Myra Hindley found guilty of two in Britain's famed Moors killings. Brady, 28, sentenced to life, for Lesley Downey John Kilbride and Edward Evans. Hindley implicated in two killings as the jury delivered its verdict.

Judy Lynn Funsch Heart Surgery Triumph In Flint

Five year old Judy Lynn Funsch of Flint Michigan who underwent a rare five hour heart surgery at the University of Michigan Hospital has been home for a month. She remains weak and not playing with neighbors though she enjoys occasional swings and car rides. The family reports she eats little while awaiting follow up tests. More than 2000 well wishers have sent letters and packages, and she looks forward to the mail each day.
